Gary Salem Toomey

Gary was born in Lansing, Michigan on February 11, 1940, the second oldest of 5 children to Simon and Vivian Toomey. Gary proudly served in the US Navy and then attended barber school. In his early years, Gary barbered with his dad and then opened up Toomey’s Barber Shop in Lansing, MI.

In 1997, Gary moved to Naples, FL, where he and his wife of 64 years resided for 9 years to be close to their grandchildren and owned Uptown Barbershop, before moving back to Lansing 8 years ago.

Gary was a family first man - always putting others before himself. He loved westerns, and classic rock. He loved to socialize and talk, had an eye for detail and took pride in the little things. He would give the shirt off his back for anyone he knew. He loved to make people laugh and was known for his “famous” baby back ribs! He was a man to look up to and will be missed dearly

Gary is survived by his wife, Marlene Toomey; his three children, David (Carolyn) Toomey, Dianna Toomey, and Craig Toomey; his two grandchildren, IV Beaton, Brigitte (Skylar)Wilks; and his brother, Edward Toomey.

A funeral service for Gary will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at 11:00 AM, with a two-hour prior visitation from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, at Emanuel First Lutheran Church, 1001 N Capitol Ave., Lansing, MI 48906. Following service at the church, Gary will be laid to rest in DeepDale Memorial Gardens, 4108 Old Lansing Rd., Lansing, MI 48917.
