I took care of Jeff at the Rehab Institute as a University of Illinois nursing student in 1975.  I had always wondered about Jeff since I taught his care to he and his fiancee. Sad to learn of his passing but happy to hear of the fulfillment he had in his life…..Marti Brown Miller

I was going through my old address book and came across Jeff’s name. A little Google searching led me to learn of his passing. I’m so sorry for your loss. I knew Jeff in the mid to late 80’s while I was in grad school at MSU. We dated back then. I so appreciated his sense of humor, independence, persistence, and undying love of the Spartans. We were on the field together when they won a game clinching their spot at the Rose Bowl. I recently lost my son (age 20) so I know that grief can be a tricky thing. Wishing the family peace. 

My thoughts and prayers go to his family. I met him through my brother Terry and often run into each other in Niles and sometimes play golf. He loved golf. After we both left Niles I would go down onto the MSU football field at half time and spend time with him. He had a quick wit and was always positive. Will miss him.

Another part of Our collective Knoll past has gone with Jeff's passing. The generation of first cousins were all lucky to have grown up together in Niles, and to have had each other as friends more than cousins. Jeff was always a person who did not hesitate to speak his mind, but usually had put a great deal of thought in what he said before hand. All those of us who knew him were better for it, and we all gathered strength from his fight post the accident that summer of 1975. I keep thinking of the phrase ,"It's not the size of the Dog in the Fight, but the size of the fight in the Dog!" This applies so much to Jeff, especially after his accident.

I have huge respect to this Man. 
Jeff was a very kind, smart, intelligent, humorous, patient man with a big heart! 
He has accomplished a lot despite unfortunate limitatons to his health! 
I've spent almost all mornings and evenings from 1993 till 1998, being his aid, while I was studiyng to pass USMLE exams and to get ECFMG certificate as a foreign Medical Doctor. And I did it - thanks to Jeff, for his understanding and support. As well as for Marsha's.
When I offered him some improvements of his life on wheelchair, he said "Nah, you can't teach an old dog new tricks!"... But he learned! And we left in the past some his medical problems as the result.
I was carrying him on my hands, close to my heart many times and feel him as my friend.
It is a big personal lost for me - I hoped to visit the States again and make a surprise visit to him. But nwo -such sudden bad news...
Please, let's keep our best memories about Jeff.

Marsha and family so sorry to hear the news. Our prayers will be with you. Have many stories most happened outside of Spartan Stadium in the Van sipping on a cold drink. I'll never forget the day Jeff let George Perles have it as he passed by the Van !!

I met Jeff when we both worked in the Michigan Department of Labor. Jeff was always positive, smiling, bright and fun. Our paths diverged. Whenever we bumped into each other, he always shared his special greeting for me: "Hey beautiful", a quick wink, a bright smile and a toss of the head to flip the hair out of his eyes. My condolences to Jeff's family. Prayers for you. Jeff is now flirting with the angels, free of his earthly restraints.

Jeff and I grew up one house apart from each other in Niles. Both of our fathers were railroad men. Mine an engineer, Jeff's a conductor. I was 2 1/2 years older and quite a bit taller.. but that didn't stop us both from playing a whole lot of basketball at my house. 
To compensate for our differences, we played a lot of " 21 and HORSE". Jeff had a great left handed hook shot! Jeff and I usually ended up on the same ball team in neighborhood games too. I learned of the diving accident a long time ago and had since lost track of Jeff. I am very sad to hear of his passing, but it is good to learn that he had a constructive and positive life! I did not know Jeff as a man, but he sure was a great kid and neighbor! To his family, I am sure he will be missed and I am very sorry for your loss.

We were all fortunate as part of the Knoll clan to have so many childhood memories of fun and frolic but I am most proud of the way Jeff turned a terrible tragedy into an amazing display of determination and passion to live and live well. I will always cherish the regular card games that we had and the laughter that occurred during those games. RIP Uncle Jeff. Even though we didn't see you often or talk I remember our time we spent together when I was growing up. I dug up some old photos back from 2008 when we had our family reunion. Though we never saw Jeff alot the short time we lived next door to him it was enough to know what a wonderful gentle kind hearted man he was. He will be missed!

So sorry to hear Jeff died last year. I lived down the hall and around from him in Owen Grad Dorm at MSU. Was only there for one semester of graduate school, but he always had a friendly "hi" when we passed each other and I thought of him as a handsome and remarkable guy. Rest in peace.
