Joanne Rugh Dafoe

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joanne Rugh Dafoe, who left us on November 11, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on July 29, 1945, in Lansing, Michigan, Joanne was a beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her life was a testament to love, kindness, and community, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Joanne’s educational journey began at Eastern High School in Lansing, Michigan, where she graduated, and she then furthered her studies at Michigan State University. She served as the office manager for Corporate Benefits for over 20 years.

A member of Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, Joanne was actively involved in her community. She lovingly assisted with the church’s small children's clothes closet, ensuring that local families received the support they needed. Additionally, her compassionate nature led her to volunteer with the Capital Area Humane Society, where she shared her love for animals, especially cats.

Joanne had a multitude of interests that enriched her life. She loved spending time with her family, especially during visits to Lake Michigan. Her favorite pastimes included browsing various shops and curling up with a good book. She was fond of her Volkswagen Beetle, a trait she inherited from her father who would regularly fix them up. She was also well known for her love of M&Ms.

Joanne was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Lawrence and Betty Pancost, her brothers, David and Robert Pancost, and her sister, Mary Gerstung.

She is survived by her son, Jeffrey (Tina) Dafoe, and her daughter, Jaclyn (David) Zemens. Joanne was especially proud of her grandchildren: Jacob Dafoe, Lucas Dafoe, Zoey Zemens, and Andrew Zemens, who brought immeasurable joy to her life.
