My brother Paul and I both worked for Famous Recipe in the early to mid-1970s. Both of us loved the place. When Paul notified me about John's passing, he said: "He was a good man who gave a lot of kids their first jobs." Amen to that. I now teach graduate-level management-communication classes, and, as an ice breaker, I often ask students to talk about their first jobs. In those discussions, I share my memories about working for John at Famous Recipe, who -- I now realize as an adult -- was exceptionally kind and patient with the rag-tag bunch of Everett High students who worked for him at the South Cedar Street store. If kids needed certain nights off for play rehearsals or track meets, he'd always schedule accordingly. If you made a mistake, he'd correct you, but in a way that made you feel you were learning something rather than being criticized. And if certain employees had biscuit-hurling fights in the back after hours (those raw biscuits tended to stick to the ceilings as evidence) -- well, he usually looked the other way. My parents were partial to FRFC, and he used to send me home with leftovers. And, of course, he donated a lot of food to the City Mission -- night after night, week after week, month after month, year after year. John and his brother Don were two of the first people I worked a real job for. I began working for them at Kentucky Fried Chicken on So.Logan St., Lansing, MI. in 1964. I worked for them there and after they opened Famous Recipe Fried Chicken in about 1966. They trusted me with responsibility when I was just really learning what that was. I listened and remember many things about both of them, great story tellers esp. John! In 1966 I went into the Air Force due to their influence, Don's Air Force stories/experience and John's stories about working for Magnavox in Ft. Wayne, IN. 

I was in the Air Force until Jan.'73 and upon discharge, John hired me as his assistant at the So.Cedar Famous Recipe, Lansing. We had much fun, wonderful 'kids' working there and in the other stores. I helped out in various ways as needed esp. for the Kalamazoo store. We did things such as having a ball game between So.Cedar and Kalamazoo store at Potter Park.

It was a joy to get to know many of their family, Judy, Joy, John and Don's wifes and I even remember their parents visiting from Indiana in the early days of KFC.

They have all been a major part of my life and I've wondered many times how everyone is.
