Uncle Karl was a wonderful uncle, always here for his family. We love him very much. 

This is one of the most impactful memories I have of Karl:  I was working December 24th, there were no other core pediatric staff working and the entire ER was short staffed.  At that time, Karl rarely picked up extra shifts.  Much to my surprise he agreed to come in and work 4hrs.  Right about the time Karl showed up there was a very sick child rushed in.  Karl took care of that child for 4 hrs while I took care of the rest of the patients.  He got the patient flown out just as his shift ended.  I got to my car that night and sobbed.  I was beyond grateful to God and Karl for saving this child's life because it wouldn't have happened without  Karl.  I deemed him my Christmas angel, he truly worked a miracle for that family. 
In peds, we affectionately referred to Karl as glitter, he was proud of this because he knew glitter makes everything better.  RIP our beloved friend 💜

Working with Karl in the Pediatric ED was always the best. I learned a lot about pediatrics from him. He was always smiling. Even when things were at their craziest. He also took great care of my son when I brought him in with a broken arm. (And teased me about calling CPS on me.) I really miss that perpetual smile and never ending humor.   

Karl. It hurts knowing you are gone. Our  memories together are engraved in my head. I remember one time we were working together on a toddler boy who couldn’t urinate. Also, this is when Sparrow’s ER rooms were stripped from towels, sheets, ect. Well, I had the toddler in a good and tight hold. The toddler was appropriately upset. I told Karl to “hurry up! Get the sample! He is urinating up my arm and down my chest and dripping onto my stomach!” Karl was able to get the sample and took his scrub top and stuffed the shirt into my armpit to stop the urine from shooting up my arm. If you ever worked in the Peds ER, you never break your hold. We wanted to make sure the little boy finished urinating, so I kept him with the tight hold while the shirt was soaking up the urine. I remember Karl silently laughing at the whole situation and left the room shaking his head stating, “I am going to run this to the lab. What size shirt from laundry do you want?” That comment, 
for some reason, made us laugh
 uncontrollably.  There are many, many more wonderful memories of Karl. I will miss him dearly. 💔

I am so sorry to hear of Karl’s passing. He was a good friend and colleague for many years when I worked at Sparrow’s Pediatric ER. He made it a pleasure to go to work and always had a smile on his face, and the kids loved him. He will be missed more than you can imagine 

Karl and I met in paramedic school over 30 years ago. A true friend! Funny, compassionate and an exceptional (medic/nurse) caregiver. We made many memories in our young careers on the ambulance (getting duped by MAL…”I’m gonna have a seizure”) and in Sparrow ER. Karl, like Dugan, was taken way too soon. My heart is broke and you are already missed…thank you for the friendship we shared!

Karl was an awesome coworker who came to work every day with a smile on his face.  He kept that smile through even the  hardest of days and was always ready with a story or joke to lighten the mood when others were having a bad day.  He will be missed by many.  My condolences to his family during this time.   Karl rest in peace my friend.
