Passed away peacefully August 13, 2015 at the Willows of East Lansing at age 96. He was born on December 11, 1918 in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. to Herman and Hattie (Voight) Boes and was raised in the Door County area. He graduated from Sevastapol High School in 1935 and married Kathleen "Tootie" (Suess) Boes on January 25, 1941 and together they raised 3 children. She preceded him in death on June 9, 1971 as well as his parents, an infant brother Norman, sister Erma(Wally) Raymakers, brother and sister in law, Clayton and Della Olson, Janis and Ernie Hitt and son in law, Bill Ebert.
He is survived by: son, Richard (Susan) Boes of Ludington, MI, and daughters, Sandra (Rich) Johnson, Lansing, MI and Barbara Ebert, Mequon, WI. He is lovingly remembered by his Grandchildren: Eric (Tatiana) Boes, Indianapolis, IN, Chris (Kimberly) Boes, Grandville, MI, Tia (Dan) Ritter, Cedarburg, WI, Anne (Tim) Murphy, Ludington, MI, Vince (Marcia) Johnson, Newport, RI, Sarah (Kevin) Laycock, Lambertville, MI, Matt Johnson, Grand Rapids, MI, Amanda Boes, Allegan,MI, Amy (Mike) Clevenger, Dewitt, MI, Ben Ebert, Mequon, WI, Tim Ebert, Brown Deer, WI and Nicholas(Jenny) Boes, Ludington, MI. and his "little gifts from God", Great-grandchildren: Luke, Julian, Stephan, Alyssa, Natalie, Hannah, Ethan, Erin, Jared, Adam, Lindy, Danielle, Ben Jr., Arianna, Gunnar, Henry and Samuel. Three nephews: Dan Olson, Mike Hitt and Jeff Olson. Marvin loved spending time with his family and always looked forward to what was happening in their lives, wherever they were. Greatest joys included a game of cribbage, being a Loyal Green Bay Packer fan and cheering on the Detroit Tigers after he moved from Wisconsin to Michigan in 1991.
Marvin worked as a shipfitter at Sturgeon Bay Shipbuilding after graduation and worked with Roen Steamship Company alongside his father-in-law, Louis Suess and Captain John Roen, on the raising of the George M. Humphrey, a 600 foot freighter that sank in the Straits of Mackinaw in 1943. He served in US Navy during WWII and completed and was qualified as a salvage hard hat diver at Great Lakes Naval Training Center and Pier 88 Naval Training School in NY near Ellis Island in 1945. He worked for Roen Salvage Company as a crane operator and salvage diver throughout his career in heavy marine construction around the Great Lakes until his injury at work in Frankfurt, MI in 1982.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Gerard's Church, 4437 W. Willow, Lansing, MI with Father John Klein as the celebrant. The family will greet friends at the church a half hour before the service. Burial will take place at a later date at Bayside Cemetery, Sturgeon Bay, WI.
