Mike was born to Robert Glen and Inez Irene (Simington) Swix on April 7, 1942, in Cadillac, Michigan. At the age of 1 his parents moved to Lansing and at age 10, his family moved again to Delta Mills near Grand Ledge, MI. Living in the country, going to a two-room schoolhouse, and attending Grand Ledge High School was a perfect start for his childhood of hunting, fishing and sports. He loved playing football and baseball (as a pretty darn good catcher).
Mike graduated GLHS in 1960, attended Lansing Community College and received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Northwood University in 1987. He was very proud of his career in the heavy machinery and press repair business starting out as an assembly worker and journeyman machinist and advancing to sales engineer. Most notably he worked at Industrial Welding Inc (now Enprotech Mechanical Services in Lansing) and Grand Rapids Machine Repair. He loved working with customers, solving their problems, and assisting in getting their operations working again.
Mike served in the Air Force from 1962 to 1966, stationed mainly in the Midwest but during such tense times as the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Kennedy’s assassination and the beginning of the Vietnam War. He put in for many other assignments but always ended up in the Midwest.
Coaching his son’s football teams during their elementary years lead to also coaching
little league softball teams, floor hockey and being an Indian Guide leader. Camping was a big part of their annual activities. For many years he was part of a men’s bowling team with many of his Swix cousins and his uncle. Mike was very sociable and gregarious, enjoyed any type of gathering with family and friends, loved to laugh, play poker and attend annual class reunions.
Mike is survived by his wife of 32 years, Cindy (Campbell) (Guthrie) Swix who will miss him immensely; his former wife, Cheryl Swix, the mother of his three sons, Rock Swix of Lansing, Gregory (Tonya) Swix of Ortonville MI, and Brian (Nancy) Swix of Aloha, Oregon and stepson, Justin Guthrie (Charlotte Lux) of Cincinnati, Ohio. He will be missed by his 5 grandchildren: Savannah Swix, Brennan Swix, Micky Swix, Jack Swix and Morgan Guthrie and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mike was predeceased by his parents, sister Sharon (Swix) Catey, and his best friends, Dennis Fellem, Alex Uschuk, and Sherman Criss.
