

Ms. Bell was born on July 7, 1953, to the union of Alfred & Mary Lou Bell at Mercy Hospital, Muskegon, Michigan. She graduated from Muskegon Senor High School and obtained her Associate of Arts degree from Muskegon Community College in December 1973. Ms. Bell earned her Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies from Grand Valley State University (GVSU) on December 13, 1997. She earned her Master of Social Work from GVSU on April 30, 2005.
Ms. Bell retired from the State of Michigan, Department of Military Affairs in 2004. During her retirement, she became a WomenHeart (womenheart.org) Champion. She received WomenHeart advocacy training in 2007 from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The heart of giving was the inspiration to all her endeavors. She volunteered for Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, Michigan from 2009 until the pandemic lockdown in 2020. She was a Union Steward for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Local 261 from 1990 until her retirement in 2004. Other affiliations include: Phi Alpha Honor Society, National Association of Social Workers (NASW), Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), Go Red for Women, Mclaren Health volunteer, 170 hours of service to Legal Aid of Western Michigan (Muskegon Office), and a member of Mount Hope Church Lansing since 2006.
Surviving is her only child, Mary O. Tyler; siblings Yvonne Morrisey, Shari Bell, Alfred (Deborah) Bell, Jr., Ronald K. Bell and Darryl Bell; and a host of nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and friends. Ms. Bell was preceded in death by her parents Alfred Bell Sr. and Mary Lou Bell; siblings Velma Drake, David Bell Sr., Pamela Bell and Ramon Bell.
