Phyllis Donna McMahan, age 70, of Trenton, Michigan passed away on January 25, 2026. Phyllis was a simple woman who found joy in the small things like a tidy home, things being in just the right place, and catching up with family.
Phyllis had a special place in her heart for the children and people she nannied and cared for, as well as the children she met during her many years of working at Montessori schools. She had a talent for creating a sense of warmth and comfort for others, whether through her devoted caretaking or through dishes for family parties, including: goulash, mostaccioli, and creamy cucumbers. A list-maker at heart, Phyllis always wrote in shorthand—her grocery lists reading like a work of art in her neat, precise penmanship: "Brd, McNChz, Tlt Ppr, Mlk, Htdgs."
Phyllis is survived by her children, Tom (Deb) McMahan and Jolene (Jerry) DeFrank; and her grandchildren, Deanna Jonker, Nathan McMahan, Elizabeth (Jaymin) Bagley, Breanna McMahan, and Jerry (Emily) DeFrank; proud great-grandmother to Gerald McMahan, Emalynn DeFrank, Josh Powers, and Savannah Jonker. She is also survived by her brother, Marty (Diane) Zimney and her niece and nephews, Matt, Michael, and Katie.
Though Phyllis didn’t have many hobbies or activities, she deeply valued time spent catching up with old friends, family, and especially her dear friend Dorothy. She cherished those quiet moments of connection, showing her considerate nature.
At her request, Phyllis will be cremated, and no services will take place at this time. Messages of condolence, memories, and photos can be shared at GRLansing.com.
