Richard was born October 12, 1922 in Fairfield, IA, the son of William E. and Ava (Shoemaker) Hartman. He passed away peacefully, August 7, 2012 at Sparrow Hospital at the age of 89. Richard graduated from Fairfield High School in 1940. He received his BS in Science from Parsons College in Fairfield and his Masters of Science from Drake University in Des Moines, IA in 1953. Richard married the love of his life, Marjorie A. West, of Corydon, IA on February 6, 1943 and they were happily married for 69 years. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, enlisting in the Signals Corps on November 25, 1942 then transferred to the U. S. Army Air Corp in 1944. He served in the 2nd and the 8th Air Forces and was discharged March 10, 1947 as Corporal, Radar Mechanic. Richard was a teacher and retired from Auto Owners Insurance, where he was manager of education and training, after many years of service. He was one of six men who founded Central Michigan Underwriters Assoc. (CMUA). He was a life time member of the Optimist Club of Lansing and attended Christ United Methodist Church. Richard coached high school baseball and basketball in Iowa and was an avid sport enthusiast, attending most all of his children’s and grandchildren’s various activities. He also loved to golf and achieved two holes in one. Richard was a talented woodworker and photographer as well as an avid reader. He and his wife, Marjorie, traveled extensively, having been to all 50 states as well as dozens of foreign countries on five continents. He was preceded in death by his son Ronald D. Hartman. Surviving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife Marjorie; daughter, Lynn (Jim) Hall; grandchildren, Jason (Sara) Hartman, Jonathon Hartman, Brooke (Andrew) Johncox, Jayme (Brian) Burley and Jacob Hall; great grandchildren, Camden, Ella and Amya Hartman, Elijah, River and Harmony Johncox, Tyler and Rylie Burley, and Annabelle Hall; and daughters-in-law, Sharon Hartman and Sandy Hartman. A funeral service will be held Friday, August 10, 2012 at 12:00 PM at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. The family will receive friends Thursday, August 9, 2012 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
