

Rick was born August 14, 1952 to Charles and Denise Vermurlen in Saginaw. His middle childhood years were lived in Cadillac before moving with his family to Lansing in 1961. He graduated from Everett High School in 1970 and was hired at General Motors at age 18, where he worked for 38 years until his retirement at age 56. He took pride in his work supporting the ISO Quality Management System at Lansing Grand River Assembly and his training in applied statistics.
Those close to Rick will remember him for his constancy and wry humor. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, family vacations, blues music, watching the Tigers and Spartans, and crossword puzzles.
Rick is survived by his sons, Rob Vermurlen (Alina) and Brad Vermurlen (Alex), along with six grandchildren: Nora, Ada, Evelyn, Steven, Olivia, and Avery. He is also survived by his brothers, Tim Vermurlen (Julie) and Dave Vermurlen (Andi), nieces Nicole and Jacklyn and their families, as well as his former stepson, Ryan Smith (Ashley) and his daughters, Maddie and Mara Smith.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Denise Vermurlen, brother Tom Vermurlen, and his former wife, Barb Vermurlen (née Olds), whose friendship and memory remained deeply meaningful to him.
A visitation will be held Thursday, January 8 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes in Lansing, Michigan, located at 900 E Michigan Ave. A memorial service will begin at 3:00 p.m. with a reception to follow.
