Tara Patrice Finney was born to Donald Leroy Finney and Stephanie René Amos on November 24, 1988, at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing. She attended elementary and middle school in Grand Ledge, graduated from Eastern High School in Lansing, and attended Lansing Community College. For the past seven years, Tara devoted herself to raising her young daughter, Luna, whom she loved "to the moon and back." Tara passed of natural causes at UM Health-Sparrow, Lansing, on March 2, 2026. She was 37 years old.
An outspoken and lifelong champion of equality, opportunity, and diversity, Tara lobbied against bullying in both Lansing and Washington D.C. when she was in high school. Before serious medical setbacks sidelined her career plans in early adulthood, she was studying to become a social worker. She excelled in situations that required interaction with the public, such as in her employment at Eve’s Place, a local domestic violence shelter, and Lansing Cottonwood Campground.
Tara is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents Ann and Don Finney, grandmother Patrice Halloran, aunts Sandra LaBette and Chris Halloran, uncle John Finney, and cousin Rob Eaton.
She is survived by many friends and relatives who she loved dearly including her daughter Luna Finney; brothers Tyler Halloran and Corrie (Amanda) Amos; nieces Mykenzie Halloran and Chloe Amos; nephews Damien Babcock and Abel Amos; aunts Cheryllee Finney, Tammy Cook, and Kim Rounds; cousins Damon (Christina) LaBette and daughter Autumn; Ashley (Rob) Eaton and children Devon, Braylen, Camden, Ariana, and Dominik; Tori Weicht; Heather Burnett and children Ali, Matthew, Skyler, and Hannah; Holly Kyes and children Douglas and Evelyn; and Hailey (Will) Howell.
Tara held many people dear to her heart. She had a way of turning strangers into friends and friends into family, including Susie, Krista, Angie, Brenda, Josh, Moose, Julie, Sarah, Savannah, Vanessa, Emma, and Tommy. Any attempt to list you all would overlook many. Know that Tara loved you all.
We invite Tara’s friends and relatives to a celebration of her life on Sunday, April 12, 1 to 4 p.m., at Knights of Columbus, 5300 N. Grand River Ave., Lansing. You are welcome to bring a dish to pass.
