Walter H. Byrd went peacefully to be with the Lord on February 24, 2010, at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy L. Byrd, and their grandson, Michael S. Dewey. He was one of twelve children born to John and Ella May Byrd on June 19, 1917, in Henry County, Tennessee. Joseph Byrd of Benecia, California is his sole surviving sibling. Walter was a devoted family man survived by three daughters, Joyce Peppel, Sue (Douglas) Brower, Kathy (Richard) Girth; six grandchildren, Timothy (Melissa) Austin, Tamara Austin, Amanda Girth (Drew Thompson), Brandee (David) West, and Joshua (Stephanie) Girth; and three great-grandchildren, Brittany Austin, David West III, and Claire Girth. He retired from the City of Lansing Municipal Market. Walter enjoyed his work, as well as the friendships he built at the Market. He took pleasure in all types of repair work, gardening, country music, and playing guitar. Walter was a man who knew the Lord and lived the “Golden Rule”. Family and friends recall time after time when he provided help to someone in need with no thought for the weather or the hour of night. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 1, at Noon at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Avenue, Lansing. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing. Visitation on Sunday at the Funeral Home from 3-6 PM. Those desiring may make contributions to Great Lakes Hospice Foundation, 900 Cooper Street, Jackson, MI 49202 in memory of Mr. Byrd.
