I worked for Waid briefly in the 80's. Met 'Charlie' during that time. A hard worker and a nice man. I was glad to have met their family.

Most of you know my Dad.   He has probably cooked for you, made you laugh, cared about you and listened to you without judging you unless maybe you were a Democrat.  He has loved his family and friends with incredible passion.  All he has ever cared about is other people. 
He never wanted anything for himself but was always giving.  The only thing I can think of was about 6 months ago he bought himself some cigars which he would never smoke in front of me.  It wasn't worth the grief I would give him. 
Charlie was in WW2 for 4 years and was involved in the North Africa Invasion which they don't mention often and also the invasion of Italy.  It was usually about a month before he would take his boots and clothes off because they were often bombed and being attacked.   He made it back and he said it was not difficult being back.  I read his diary and he kept mentioning they thought the war would end soon but it didn't and he always talked about how he missed his family. 
During the war, he won $11,000 playing cards and running dice games and he sent the whole amount home for his family.  A lot of his money went to paying for my uncle's medical degree.  When he got home the money was all gone so he got a mortgage to buy a home. 
He met this beautiful wonderful woman, Gloria Edwards, who met a lot of famous movie stars as a beautician at the Barbizon hotel in NYC.  They married but Gloria loved clothes and she bought a dress for $29 and said that was her money.  Well that didn't sit too well with Charlie so HE decided it was time to start a family and that is how I was born.  
They had 4 children and my father worked and worked.  He was always doing double shifts as a NYC Correction Officer and painted on the side.  He once went 3 YEARS without a day off.  We went on 2 vacations to see my grandparents in Florida. He NEVER complained about how hard he worked. 
I remember as a kid he was sleeping one Sunday morning and I tried to get him up for church because we learned that it was a mortal sin if you didn't go to church on Sunday.  I cried because I thought he would go to hell, but the poor man just need a little sleep before he had to go to work again.  
In the early 70's we drove up to Monroe NY and painted 3 sides of 2 houses and drove home 87 miles.  I went on a date with the love of my life even though I was so exhausted but he went to work the night shift at the Brooklyn Courts.  My Mom and Dad raised 4 good children and they continued to be the most incredible grandparents.  
They would let the grandchildren wreck their house and be screaming at 9:30pm.  He would take them to McDonalds and let them play there for 3 hours.  I would always say “how do they do that?” But now I call them when I am at McDonalds with Julia and they get the biggest kick out of that.  I learned so much from them on how to be the best grandparent.  
My Dad never had a hobby because he was always doing for others and that made him so happy. Life has never been about HIM, but always about others. Dad, there are just so many stories and I don't want to lose you.  
There is something to be said for the fact that my Mom and Dad were invited to the weddings of their bank teller and check-out girl and they went. Friends to all; always trying to put a smile on someone's face.  I think I inherited that because I am always try to make people smile or laugh, sometimes with success and sometimes not. 
Now Dad is so apologetic for all we have to do for him and we explain that just as he has been there for all of us; we are now there for him.  He would much rather be doing for us.   It is so wonderful to be here to hold his hand, tell old stories and take care of him. He has been just wonderful and I am the most fortunate son to have Charlie Tribiano as my father.  Dad, I love him so very much.
Have you ever heard a grandson asking his grandfather to be his best man at his wedding?  Well, my son Jason asked his Pop and wow was Pop honored to be his best man. 
Even though my parents moved to Florida after we had our children, they were always there for them.  Many, many visits including a month in the summers created an everlasting bond.  My far to the left daughter, Shana, and my conservative dad had some whopper arguments over the years and often Shana would get angry but it never interfered with their relationship.  My parents gave so much love to all their grandchildren and the love has come back to them double fold. 
My dad also took incredible care for both his parents; always being there for them.  When we were kids he helped them with money and my Mom didn't always think it was fair that we would go without but my father just kept working to support 2 households. 
When I was a kid I was a big Yankee fan and he kept promising me he would take me to a game but it always got postponed because he a double shift at work interfered.  Finally we got to go and we sat in the bleachers.  Mickey Mantle hit a home run and that was my favorite moment as a kid.  We never got to go again but I can remember it like it was yesterday. 
For his 90th birthday we had a party in his backyard for him.  Our most wonderful friends, Kevin and Kathy, came to it.  Kathy had not been on a plane in probably 40 years because she had fears but she got on the plane and came.  Wow!   Also Stephen Hayes, a family friend came from England for the party.  We had the greatest time reminiscing. 
My dad used to walk a lot and he would talk to people who had grapefruit and orange trees and they gave him their bounty.  He would always send me big boxes of what he got.  I would come home from work and start off with 3 grapefruits and then eat 3 more.  They were so good. Good thing I have an iron stomach. 
This past October was the first time in years Dad didn't come to our house and spend a long week cooking and freezing great soups, sauce, broccoli-rabe, etc.  Kath and I had great meals all winter and spring.  He also cooked a great meal for all my friends.  He would dream about all he had to do for weeks before he came to visit.  We would cook all day and then about 7pm he would say “come on let's go do a few more pots”.  Where he got his energy I don't know.  I always told him I was glad to see him come but happy to see him go.  He wore me out.  I washed more pots and pans than you could believe. 
Every Saturday and Sunday my father went up to Starbucks and joined his group of most wonderful friends.  He loved them and they love him.  He so looked forward to going.  Anytime I came down I would join them and what a good time was had by all.  They just have fun and a lot of laughs.  My Dad made them many a homemade Italian dish.  They have been visiting him here at home since he got sick. 
When Kathy and I got married we were 2 hippies and we decided that we would only invite friends but not extended family to the wedding.  Looking back, we say how could we have done that, but we did.  Well my parents never said a word to us about that bad decision.  Kathy always said if her mother was alive that would never had happened.  But they never said a word about it.  To this day they stay out of other people's business.  I wish I could be more like them but I feel a need to get in my 2 cents. 
My dad did a lot of volunteer work over the years but his favorite was The Lions Club.  He would stand in front of a bank as long as they were open.  He and his partner were getting about $200 a day but he decided to change his strategy and ask for money for the blind.  They started bringing in over $500 a day. He loved to distribute money for glasses to deserving people.  The Lions Club gives 100% of the money to the needy.  He also worked at my Uncle's Italian deli for free for a long time until my Uncle got established.  
My dad didn't talk about the war much until the last 20 years or so.  Can you imagine being in the war zone for 4 years away from your family.  My father is so happy he served his country. E very Veterans Day he anxiously awaits all the calls he gets thanking him for his service but he always is most happy to get the call from my wonderful friend Kevin who is always so interested in his stories.  I don't think my dad will be here for this Veterans Day but Dad all I can say is I love you so very much.
My wonderful Dad died early this morning (Sunday, September 30, 2012).  We were so fortunate to have him so long but you just never are ready.  We have been a most fortunate family and I always said I have lead a charmed life. There is an incredible void but we have been left with so many happy memories. 
My Dad was a dynamic individual, a straight shooter always clear on his views.  To me he is the definition of The Greatest Generation; all about others and never about himself.  This was never failing.  I am so proud to be his son. 
Last October my Dad (age 93) and his brother, Dr. Cal Tribiano (age 91) went on a conservative cruise together with all the elite conservative thinkers.  My uncle told us that at the end of the cruise everyone knew Charlie Tribiano.  He said all these famous authors were coming to Charlie because he knew and remembered so much.  My Dad didn't go to college; the war and family interfering but he was a very smart man.  There was never a choice of whether we were going to college;  it was just a given that we were. 
Oh gosh, there are stories after stories to tell but I just thought Charlie's story is worth knowing about. We can all learn from The Greatest Generation. They have given us so much. Thank you all for listening to the stories of my Dad. 
Gee, I thought I was going to be here for months and I have been so happy to be here with my family.  It just happened so quickly but it is best he passed because the final days were tough for him. I leave you with this thought:  Appreciate every day with your family and friends.

I was so sad to read the obituary of Mr. Tribiano's passing and wanted you to know that I will always remember him as a loving and kind man. Good morning.  My name is Mia Libby.  I'm one of Charlie Tribiano's seven amazing grandchildren.  And we know we are amazing because our Poppy told us we are.

What do you say about a man like Charlie Tribiano?  How do you put a life so rooted in pride and loyalty and honor into words?  How do you eulogize a man who loved others so much and was loved so much by so many people?  I can try to explain his generosity, his vivacious spirit - - even well into his 90s - - and his sharp sense of humor.  I can tell you how he was at once the strongest and most honorable man and yet the most sensitive and loving man. I can try, but I don't think I need to.  You all had the privilege of knowing Poppy and that was the best gift of all.  

I remember visiting Grandma and Poppy every March when we were growing up.  In the weeks and months leading up to our vacation, Poppy would tell us how his coffee can was shaping up. His old Folger's can was the place he kept his spare change. Each day he would put all his pocket change into that coffee can and save it for our upcoming visit. He saved that money for us to enjoy on our trip.  When my brother and I would arrive we'd sprint to that can.  We would grab a seat at the dining room table immediately, counting the pennies, dimes and quarters that Poppy had put in there for us.  Sometimes we'd even find a five or ten dollar bill in there.  That was always the biggest treat. When we got down to the last coin we would announce the total to Poppy.  

Right away, Poppy would drive us to the bank, where we'd deposit the rolled change and then straight to the Tyrone mall for a marathon shopping session.  I can still remember Poppy waiting so patiently at the fountain for us to return and show him our goods.  And he never tired.  Afterwards, we'd drag him back to the house for hours and hours of Rummikub.  We were always the ones to call it quits, never him.

As I got older, I started to realize how seriously hilarious my grandfather was.  His humor was disarming, brash and often a little unexpected.

A year and a half ago I got married.  At my rehearsal dinner several friends delivered speeches and gave toasts.  At the end Poppy stood up and said: “No one asked me to speak but I'm 92 years old and I don't care what anyone says.  And my grandson Conor looks just like Joe DiMaggio.”

The next day, at the wedding he took Grandma out on the dance floor right away.  He was spinning her around and enjoying his whole family being together.  After watching the crowded dance floor that night he told my mom, Lynn, “There's a whole new way to dance now.  You don't need a partner.  You don't even need to know what you're doing.  You just get on the dance floor and jump up and down.”  That was Poppy.  Always observant.  Always spot on.  And always hilarious.

Love, family and friends were truly Poppy's measure of worth and richness.   He loved them with every ounce of himself and truly lived his life for those moments he got to spend with them.  He loved cooking gavadels and broccoli rabe and gravy for them.  He loved making them laugh and laughing with them.  He loved arguing about politics with them and loved  telling them stories about the war and meeting General Patton.  He loved to tell stories about his kids – Dave, Lynn, Rich and Waid – and he especially loved telling stories about the love of his life – our Grandma. 

As a grandfather Poppy was the best.  When we were little he would let us eat sugar cereals and would take us to McDonalds.  Sometimes twice in the same day.  (And he never told our mothers.)  As we grew up he became a true friend to all of us.  Poppy was my cousin Jason's best man at his wedding.  Poppy was my cousin Shana's political sparing partner, my brother Conor's political ally.  Poppy was my cousin Rachel's cooking partner and he was a daily force of love and support for Lauren and Brenna who had the pleasure of being Poppy's next-door neighbors for the better part of their lives.  
For me, Poppy will always be the person I will strive to be - - but probably will never come close.  But if I can spend a lifetime as loved and respected as my Poppy, I will leave this world a happy person –just like he did.

When I was a little girl Poppy said to me, “Mia, did you know I'm the richest man in the world?”I didn't understand what he meant and asked him to explain himself.  “Yes Mia, I really am the richest man in the world because I have the best family in the world. I have the most wonderful wife, the best children and the most beautiful grandchildren.  And you wouldn't believe how much I love you all.  That is what rich is.  And I am the richest man in the world.”  

I can't tell you all what an honor it is to deliver a eulogy for such a man.  Every day I had with Poppy was a treasure that I will hold with me forever.

Thank you all for coming today. It's means so much to my family. I wish you all the wealth and riches of Charlie Tribiano.

I've had the great fortune of being Pop and Grams first grandchild, and all I can remember is having the best times of my life. Each time Shana and I travelled to Florida bested the previous trip. The love and freedom Pop and Gram afforded us as kids formed the most treasured memories of my childhood. As I got older, maybe 13 or 14, I was recruited to go on painting and tile jobs with Waid and Pop, and it was at this time that Pop began talking to me like a man. Teaching me tips on working and how to do things, but mainly stories of his life and how he treated people. Waid would be busy doing pretty much everything, Pop and I were there just to help, and  we would talk the whole day while working,  only stopping to tease Waid about a holiday he left on the wall, or to "take it easy" when the job got tense. Oooh, how Waid loved that. And when we stopped for lunch, Pop would drink his thermos of hot coffee Gram packed, in 90 degree heat, while sweating from the work, as he explained being hot was a state of mind. He used to tell everyone that, because Pop had it figured out. You don't have to let things bother you, no matter what it is, you choose how to feel, and Pop chose to be grateful for everything, especially Gram. While he put on a good show sometimes, yelling "Gloria!", he always talked to me about how good Gram was to him and everyone in our family. 
 It was during these talks that I began to understand what an incredible man Pop was because I saw that he lived what he said. The most important things in life, Pop said, were his family, always #1, treating people fairly without judging, that ones' station in life meant nothing to who you were as a person, and putting in a proud, honest days' work. These were the things that would bring a lifetime of joy. These values weren't preached, they were lived. His leadership was by example, and knowing our family and meeting so many of his friends along the way, I understood that this was why Pop was so loved and respected by everyone who knew him. 
I know his legacy of fairness and joy lives on in everyone here today, and in the so many others he touched throughout his life. So I would like to again say thank you to my best man. The best man, Charlie Tribiano. Thank you for being who you were, for all of us.

Mr. Tribiano was a warm soul that made everyone welcome and feel important.  He passed those traits to his children - all fine people.  My warmest memory was his reminiscents of his WWII days in Italy.  Warm, touching and insightful thoughts from a, then, young man in our worlds greatest conflict.  Good bye Mr Tribiano.

My grandfather, Calvin Tribiano has told me wonderful stories of him and his brother Charlie growing up on Campbell Avenue in Staten Island. 

"The Campbellians" as they were called, used to play baseball regularly against another team of young ruffians down the street. 

Towards the end of the game, both teams would bend the rules a little and bat out of order. (It's not cheating if both teams do it right?) My grandfather said the Cambellians always picked Charlie to come through and hit for them when the game was on the line!

I will always be thankful for having met Uncle Charlie and the great advice he gave me: "never let anyone control your destiny!" Thanks again, Uncle Charlie. I have always remembered that.

Happy Birthday Poppy! 

I love you and miss you so so so very much. I think of you every day. I hope I see you again someday somehow. I am writing down every memory I have of you in a special book. I treasure all of life I got to share with you. There are so many precious things I treasure about you and Gram, but one that I promise to remember everyday is how, when we were in Italy, towards the end of our trip there was a dinner with a dance floor and you and Gram were the first ones on the floor. There are so many things I love and treasure about all our precious times, full of love, together, but this one I promise to keep with me so I always remember to never wait to get on the dance floor, literally and proverbially, to honor the incredible amount there is too admire and appreciate about you and you and Gram. I love your birthday. It has been a great life gift to celebrate and love you and be loved by you, so today, October 7, is always, always a beautiful day because of you. So Grateful to have known you, Honored to have called you my Friend. Charlie was one of those very few people that everyone levitated to, He was a magnet. The first words he always spoke were *How Ya Doing* not just an everyday exchange or formality but a true concern for anyone who made contact with him. Family was everything to him. So in Love with Gloria & He was so proud of his Children & Grandchildren. I had the pleasure of working for him quite a few times. Always looked forward to hearing that laugh & Seeing his smile. We talked of many things, Some of which many do not know. He was a kind man. But that kindness came from many years of Adversity, Hard work, Dedication and Devotion to his Family  Friends & Country. His service was Above & Beyond what any man should have ever been asked to participate in. He was a True Son, Patriot and when called upon a Warrior. So Thankful to have seen you at the house only a few short weeks ago my friend. Words can never express the empty void left by your passing or the sadness in my heart that your gone. I truly believe though that God needed his best Man at this time. I'll always remember our times together & As I always said If I'm half the man Charlie said I am I'm 99.9 percent ahead of the field. I sincerely know you will be missed by Many & Know that when the Lord calls upon us to join him You will be there & Greet us with * How Ya Doing*

   When I first met Charlie over 42 years ago, I had expected a kind of stern and difficult person  (after all he had been described as "Hitler!").   I was a little bit afraid but what I actually met was a very warm and welcoming man.  And that's the only one I've ever known.  He was always just a great guy to me.  He couldn't do enough for us and our children.
        There are so many happy memories and some of my fondest thoughts of Charlie relate to food - of course!  All the meals  he made for us over the years and especially all his soup  and  sauce (gravy!)  marathons    (Kathy, I need that garlic now!.  Dave, hurry up and wash that pot I need it again!).   He was tireless - always giving, giving, giving.
    I'll always cherish our times together - just as the cooking was winding down, he'd always be ready  for a glass of wine with me - Salute, Charlie!  I love you and will miss you so very much.

My father-in-law is someone I truly admired. I can't recall him ever complaining. He always said how fortunate he was. He had so much love to give. I will miss his stories. I will miss his smile. I will miss you Charlie.

I have only ever had one father-in-law, but I know I got the best one.  Charlie welcomed me into his family in that big, loving way that he was so good at.  He also embraced my family, and over the years my Dad and he were best of freinds.  Everyone knew not to turn down a Tribiano party because they were the best, just like Charlie.  We all know Charlie was not shy, so anyone within a large area of earshot got to hear about his "never can do anything wrong grandchildren", potiical opinion, in fact opinion of any kind because he was passionate about life.  All our worlds became a lot dimmer on September 30th.  I was truly blessed to have shared so many wonderful years with him.

You were the best grandfather a girl could ever ask for. Whenever I got into fights with my parents you would always go against their word and take my side(even though it was clear I was wrong). You were always there to help me. I remember we use to go to bush gardens every day. No matter how much money it costed you, all you cared was to see us smile. I will miss you so much Poppy. Can't wait to see you again someday<3

Dear Gloria and the entire Tribiano Family:

We are so blessed to have known "Charlie", we have never seen him without that wonderful smile on his face. I will never forget how he and Gloria made us feel so welcomed, when we moved to 33rd Ave.  Waid was laying tile in our home and Charlie was there helping him everyday and then when we started to paint he came everyday to help us until the job was down.  He truly loved helping people and making them happy with laughter.

We were all sad the day that Charlie and Gloria moved to be closer to Waid, Dara and the girls but that was the best thing and it was their gain and our loss.

Thanks for the memories Charlie you are truly a very, very special man.  I hope you meet up with my Dad.

Charlie had personality!  We have fun memories of him, taking his daily walk to the Hess station to get the day old donuts!  But only after his noon time cigar on the porch, listening to talk radio.  He supported all the neighborhood functions and was a great neighbor.   We'll miss him.

It's a bit ironic that one of my first and fondest memories of Poppy comes from the only time he ever scolded me.  I remember so clearly that I was standing in the hallway in our apartment and I had started some inane fight with my mother, the kind I was famous for in my youth.  Pop was sitting on the chair in the living room, waiting for the storm to pass when I said something that clearly crossed a line.  Poppy's rose up and, with that powerful, barrel-chested voice, the one that had once wilted Fascists and Nazis, demanded, "Don't you ever speak to your mother like that!"  I was frozen.  He didn't even yell, but the strength and determination in his speech rendered me catatonic.  I tried to squeak out a "Sorry, Poppy" but I'm quite certain the sound did not even come out.  It seems a bit odd for this to be one of my most cherished memories of Charlie Tribiano, but that that the first moment I truly recognized the absolute respect and honor I had for this man.  And in the 20 plus years following that moment where I got to know the man, that sentiment grew exponentially each time we sat down and had a cigar together.  I honor and respect him for fighting for this country.  I honor and respect him for giving me, my sister and all my cousins the opportunity to do anything we wanted in life.  I honor and respect him for the way he loved his wife and children.  I even honor and respect the man for being the greatest damn cook I've ever met well into his 90s.  I will never forget the impact my grandfather had on me and I miss him with all my heart.  I love you Pop, I hope you are having a cigar with Frank and Dean right now.

Charlie Tribiano was a wonderful man, husband, father, and friend. He was full of life and good spirits. He wanted everyone to feel included and welcome. Charlie was crazy about Gloria. He loved to tease her and make her laugh. He was very proud of his beautiful wife and immensely proud of all of their children and grandchildren. It was such a treat to see Charlie and Gloria dancing together at Charlie's 90th birthday party.

28 Delafield Avenue on Staten Island was a second home to many. Brian, Mark, and I always felt welcome to join the Tribianos for a delicious family meal, a BBQ, or just an evening stretched out on the living room floor.  Charlie loved to engage us in discussions about issues, to challenge our assumptions, to make us think. I remember so much laughter, so much warmth.

We'll miss you, Charlie. Thanks for loving us all so much.

I knew him as Charlie and only recently learned that Charlie was a nickname.  No matter which name you use, the one thing you knew about Charlie is that he deserved the title of "Friend".  He adopted me into the family during my first meal at "Chez Tribiano" and that was that.  We had so many great conversations over the years I knew Charlie.  Charlie, I love you and I will miss you.

How do we describe a man that has touched the hearts of so many people during his 93 plus years.  Charlie loved life and wanted to share his stories, jokes and great meals with everyone.  You were part of the family when you met him, he took you in and made you feel welcomed.  There was no pretense with Charlie, he only expressed what he thought; that's what we loved about him.  He will be missed by all, there will never be another Charlie.  May he rest in peace and keep everyone entertained in his after life.

Dear  wonderful Tribiano family,
  Yes indeed, Charlie was a firecracker....so full of life!  There was nothing boring about Charlie.  He took you in, shared his ideas readily.  Al and I enjoyed delicious meals at la casa Tribiano and recipes from a guy with a heart of gold and such wisdom and confidence.  It had to rub off on you. Everyone he touched will miss him. Uncle Charlie truly loved his family.  He was dedicated to his children and grandchildren and so proud of their achievements.  I will miss hearing stories about his childhood, grandma and grandpa, the war and anything else he felt important enough to talk about. Charlie often told me that I was definitely his favorite son-in-law. Despite the fact that I was his ONLY son-in-law, I was still touched by his kind thoughts. I know of no man who loved his children more and every one of his grandchildren were pure gold to him.  We are all lucky people that Charlie Tribiano passed our way and touched our lives.  His warm heart and unmatched spirit  will live forever in those he touched.

My dad, the definition of The Greatest Generation was so loving, loyal and giving to family, friends and anyone he came into contact with. A most selfless person who wanted nothing for himself but only for others. I learned so much from him that still inspires me to become a better person. We will miss him so much and we were so fortunate to have him as our father. I love you so very much Dad. Dave
