Gary F. Watkins, 85, went home to be with the Lord on May 15, 2020. He was born December 25, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan. He is preceded in death by his father, Glenn F. Watkins, mother, Gladys Watkins, and brother, Gilbert Watkins.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sarah Watkins; five children, Carol (Rick) Reinertsen, Gordon (Margaret) Watkins, Kay (Brian) Boyd, Gary (Sherree) Watkins, and John (Jill) Watkins; twelve grandchildren; Scott, Jennifer, Jeremy, Kristin, Robert, Sara, Amanda, Ginnie, Tyler, Kayleigh, Joseph, and Bryce; ten great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Gary, along with his brother, father, and grandfather, were some of the early real estate developers in Seminole, Florida in the 1940’s. They developed, owned, and operated Lake Seminole Resort and Lake Seminole Resort North. Prior to that the family owned and operated The Watkins Pony Concession in Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan for generations.
Gary played football for Largo High School and attended Florida State University where he met his wife, the love of his life. Post retirement he was a summer resident of Cashiers, North Carolina, loved dancing, and was an avid tennis player. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Gary was a devout Christian with dedication to family and church, taught Bible classes, and influenced many people throughout his life. His love for God stands out as his highest attribute.
