Born on August 31, 1922 to Dr. Jack & Mrs. Bessie Marshall in Jacksonville, FL Jack grew up in rural AL with his brother Milton and his sister Louise. On June 25, 1944 he vowed to love and cherish Margaret E. Dunn, a promise he faithfully honored throughout their marriage and life together.
Jack made another pledge, this one to serve his country. He stormed the beaches of Normandy and bravely fought throughout WWII. His military career provided opportunities to live both internationally as well as many locations across the U.S. During these years, the Marshall family grew with the additions of daughters Jackie and Nancy. Jack’s daughters recall the heartbreak of being apart from their doting father but also fondly remember receiving letters chronicling his tours with stories and pictures. They vividly remember the anticipation and excitement of his returns, seeing their handsome father in his crisp uniform and encircling him with their love. Jack Marshall earned promotions in the U.S. Army over his 20 years of service, eventually retiring as a Master Sargent.
Desiring a change, Jack used his personable nature and leadership skills to start a second career in management, successfully overseeing and owning properties in Ga. In 1985 Jack and Margaret retired to Largo, FL to be closer to their daughters. In this stage of life, Jack was able to connect with his family, meet new friends, and gift his time and wisdom to those he loved. He created opportunities to pass his values onto his grandchildren (and later, great-grandchildren) during woodworking, gardening, fishing, or over his favorite meal of the day, breakfast. Many have shared their memories of Jack’s sense of humor, his playful and fun personality, and his ability to make one feel unconditionally loved. A family friend reflected on Jack’s influence on his life as a child and perfectly stated, “They just don’t make men like him anymore.”
Jack Marshall was preceded in death by his wife Margaret and sister Louise. He is survived by his brother Milton, daughters Jackie (Dave) Gerald and Nancy (John) Wooten, grandchildren Carrie (Scott) Carty, Jeff Shuniak, Teri (Sean) Magson, Brian (Julie) Carr and 6 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Anona United Methodist Church in the Chapel of Prayer on Wednesday February 15th at 2:00 PM.
