Mae Leavey was born on July 29, 1920 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She married the love of her life , Albert Leavey and moved to Florida in 1953. As she settled in to her new surroundings she made many friends being part of the Women’s Auxiliary for the Holy Sacrament Episcopal Church of Ft. Lauderdale. She also enjoyed bible study and spending peaceful evenings knitting, crocheting and doing crafts.
Mae loved her children and her biggest joy was raising and being involved in their lives. As her children got older Mae experienced the joy of being a grandmother and great grandmother. Mae became affectionately known as “Mema” to her grandchildren. She made the best of any situation and loved spending time with her family, especially her cousin Helen Duffy.
Her children know that it was her love, grace and guidance throughout the years that helped them all become the loving people they are today. Mae passed away peacefully on June 30, 2013 and will be missed by her family and friends. She asked that she be remembered by this small thought:
Remember me with smiles and laughter, for that’s how I remember you.
If you must remember me with tears and sadness, then don’t remember me at all.
