Dr. Mario P Cometti died on October 8th, 2021 in Largo, Florida of complications from a breakthrough case of Covid-19, after a stroke weakened and made him vulnerable. He was 85 years old and was surrounded by family at the time of his passing. Visitation services will be held at Serenity Funeral Home in Largo Florida, at 9am on Friday the 15th of October, followed by an 11am memorial mass at St Jerome Catholic Church in Largo with Father Rob Cadrecha as celebrant. Mario was born April 21st, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York, the only child of Italian immigrant parents Mario, a chef and Inez, a dressmaker. He attended Fordham University and moved to Italy in the late 1950s to attend medical school at the University of Bologna. It was there, on a blind date, that he met Josephine Faija. He asked her to marry him at the start of their second date - their union would last more than 56 years. After obtaining his medical degree, Mario and Josie returned to the U.S. and started a family. He interned at a hospital in New York City, before being drafted into the US Air Force in the mid-1960s. He was commissioned as a Captain, serving at Laredo Air Force Base in Texas, completing his service in 1968. He opened his own private practice as a pediatrician in the Catskill and Hudson areas in upstate New York. In his later years, he traveled across America, working in a variety of locations underserved by the medical community, including several Native American reservations. He retired in Florida, living in St Augustine before relocating to Largo.

He was honest to his core, strong in his faith and always put his family first. He worked hard, laughed and lived with gusto and danced as if nobody was watching. Dr. Cometti was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine and son David and is survived by children, Barbara, Mario, Billy, Steven and Kurt, as well as grandchildren Christopher, David, Isabella, Grace, Pepper and Adeline.

A visitation for Mario will be held Friday, October 15, 2021 from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at Serenity Funeral Home, 13401 Indian Rocks Road, Largo, FL 33774. Following the visitation will be a funeral service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St Jerome Catholic Church, 10895 Hamlin Blvd, Largo, FL 33774.

Thank you Dr. Cometti for being my mentor when I was going back to school to earn my FNP degree from Sage Graduate School. I learned a great deal from you! RIP

Dr Cometti was my Pediatrician, also my sisters Gennea and Emily. We adored him, we went to his practice on Warren St forever. Much to my surprise when I grew up and became a nurse I had to call the on-call doctor about a patient and it was Dr Cometti who called me back. I was like “as in Mario Cometti” and he said “yes Mackinzie as in Dr Mario Cometti from Hudson what is wrong? I used to take care of patients when they came into this world and now I take care of them as they leave this world” I don’t know how long he took care of patients at the former Green Manor in Ghent but he was always a delight to see as he would reminisce about my childhood. He was a stern man, but a great man. May St Peter welcome you into the gates of Heaven Dr Cometti.

To the Family of Dr. Cometti,
You won't remember me but my sister, Pat Coons (deceased), worked with Dr. Cometti for several years at his Warren St. practice in Hudson, N.Y. along with Beverly, Dolores, and at times, even your mom, Josie. They were like one big family there and stayed close friends. All of my children were fortunate to have had Dr. Cometti as their pediatrician. I always felt he treated us special, especially when he learned that we shared the same birthday. Lots of good memories for sure!
I am glad to see that he led such a full life after he retired from Hudson.
My sympathy to all of your families.

Mario was a loving, kind, always considerate man.
He was the blue eyed gentleman always opening a car door for a lady, pulling out a chair.... just where did those type men go in this day and age. I was blessed to know him and have him in my life these past 6 years, particularly the special time shared these past 12 months moving to Belleair Bluffs
What a remarkable Christian loving man.
Always in my heart Mario ❤️

I remember a home that welcomed everyone and every time. A home filled with love and genuine. We could argue in one breath and love on one another in the next moment. My dad and mom were always generous in hearth and home. My father was a man of high integrity and honesty. Selfless, Humble and giving. He loved his family without fault good and bad. There will be no one quite like him again. He loved my mother and us all unconditionally. I cannot imagine how their reunion in heaven has been. They will forever watch over us all.

I can only repeat words I have heard before: The people we love become part of who we are. Dr Cometti and the whole family will always part of the Schindler family. I see the dinner table, I hear Dr Cometti's voice, I hear the family voices, the discussions, the laughter and always I felt the love. Dr. Cometti shared not only his gift of medicine, he shared himself to his family and all around him.

On this earth we no longer have the deep intellect, love, caring and generosity of one of the true greats, doc Cometti. Admired, respected and deeply cherished by all who ever had the joy of knowing him. Through his doctoring and giving he touched and helped so many.

Thank you, doc Cometti, my second dad, for all you ever did for me and my family.

Thinking of you always. With all my love and my biggest hug,

Kurt
