The second of 2 bottles from the 1950s I brought from Florida to NYC when Muriel decided to purge her liquor cabinet sometime in the early 2000s. Nearly empty, I used a slug in the syrup this morning for my French Toast and the faint aroma of it was enough to send me down memory lane and back to her memorial website. Stephan, her son and my father, just turned 81 and I am thankful to be reminded that the genes run strong in this family (mostly among the women!) and he will be around for a long time still! I miss you Muriel! What my brother Matt wrote on this site was spot on!

Oh what an incredible woman. I met Muriel as a teenager at Rachel's and Evelyn's home in San Mateo, California. I fell in love with her spunk, her energy and her elegance. My heart is heavy at hearing of her passing. My heart is light when I think of her humor and how she made me feel when in her presence. Most of all, happy when I think of her legacy in all of her family. My thoughts are with all of you, family and friends, who must be missing her terribly.

Grandma Muriel for you

For me, grandma Muriel is that irrepressible joy -- she touches your  arm, her eyes flash, she exclaims...     "sweetie!" and then  something she must have you know.

So poised, so elegant, she smoothes over awkwardness, forgives  everything.

She strectches in the morning, at work she's worshipped like a local  deity -- we walk behind her, Noah and I, like ducklings or like a  little parade she leads -- people whisper "those are muriels  grandkids!"

Now i understand -- The soul really is immortal, hers is with me now  and with you, I carry it around in my thoughts and apply its  sensibility here and there.

She'll stick with me forever, and I can say to her "grandma, I love  you, i miss you, and how I wish I could have said goodbye (I had no  idea I could wish so fervently!)  You're so wise, you understand,   no need to make excuses -- and now posthumously you teach me your  greatest lessons."

Even in death, somehow she finds the time... Thats grandma Muriel  for you.

Muriel was one of my grandpa's siblings that I remember most vividly from when I was a child.  She was always so vibrant and happy.  I look at the pictures of the Berman siblings and think there must be a great reunion going on in heaven with lots of smiles and non-stop conversation.  My condolences to all those who loved her.
