Ryan’s move from this world to the next leaves an incredible void for all who knew him. His culinary creativity and dedication kept Checkers menu always crave-able and those who worked with him always laughing. So many memories, including this one at the 2006 Super Bowl in February in Detroit. My prayers for peace to Heather, Dylan, Kellen, Craig & Jan.

Ryan was an incredible person.  He could light up a room with his big personality and make you laugh from the next room.  He cared deeply and gave so much to the world, the people he worked with, the projects he worked on, and the products he created.  There are no words that can express how tragic it is that he is gone far too soon, but he leaves a legacy in the massive impact he had on his family, friends, and the far-reaching network of people who worked with him over his career.  I count myself extremely lucky to be one of those people and to have worked alongside him for the past 20 years.  I still can't believe he is truly gone.  He brought so much light, and his absence will be felt greatly every day.  I am so very sorry for your loss.

Ryan was and will always be a kind fun soul . I feel so blessed knowing him!

My deepest sympathy to you Heather and the boys and all of your extended family.  I will never forget the time spent with both you and Ryan in Islamorada several years back at the Redbone tournament .  Both of you exuded such wonderful energy and love for each other.  I was lucky enough to have Ryan as a customer for several years .  He was always so positive, and I always enjoyed our meetings  .  I esp lived  hearing about your family trips back to Islamorada and seeing pics of your boys and their incredible fishing catches.  His love and pride for the 3 of you was so evident.  His passing leaves an impact on so many of us in the food community .  Wishing you all strength during this incredibly difficult time.

We didn’t have enough time to spend with him but when we did he was always such a wonderful person to be around. The love he showed to his family was one that is seldom found.

I became acquainted with Ryan through the lens of a camera, but before long, we became friends, and he was someone I always looked forward to spending time with. His passion and energy for his work were contagious. I would often tell my videography team to just point the camera at Ryan, don't worry he’ll deliver something great. He never disappointed and always made it into the highlight reel. I was looking forward to spending more time with him now that our children attended the same school. I can’t imagine what his family is going through and how they are coping with the loss of such a remarkable person. Our deepest sympathies go out to you all.

Sending my deepest condolences to all of you in this time of unimaginable grief.  Ryan was such a great guy with the best smile.  My heart goes out to all that loved him.

How do you some up 13 plus year work & friendship? So many trips from the coldest areas of the country to hottest parts of the country enjoying dinners, creating food and making memories with each trip traveled. Many miles, so many discussions about our demon Yorkies, boats, fishing, kids, families, vacations and collogues. I am not sure that there were many people Ryan could not connect with or hold a conversation. Always ready with that barrel laugh and a positive attitude. Songs playing on the test kitchen speakers while trying to create the next best "Chicken bite". Ryan you will be missed by many and missed by people closer to you than me. But I will always appreciate and remember the many adventures we shared. My deepest sympathy to the Joy family. I can not imagine the loss. I hope that you will take comfort in the fact that he will always be remembered by many as an honest family man that enjoyed his work and loved his life.

Ryan was my customer for many years; but along the way, he became a dear friend.  Ryan was amazing.  He was always professional, respectful, and so creative.  He brought such a high level of energy to everything he did.  Never one to be satisfied with the status quo, he was always thinking about what was possible. 
 Most importantly, when Ryan and I were not discussing food, we were talking about our families.  Ryan's oldest son and my daughter were born a week apart.   So, our kids always came up in conversations.  I'm so thankful we talked just a few months ago; and of course, we exchanged some recent pictures of our kids.  Ryan loved his family so passionately and was so proud of them.  My deepest sympathy for the entire family.  I am so sorry for your loss.

I am so saddened by the news of Ryan’s passing.  He was one of my favorite students during my years at Belcher Elementary!  Smart, fun , and full of personality.  Ryan made each day interesting and fun!  I count it a privilege to have been his teacher, along with his sister Holly.  I know he will be missed by so many but I’m sure he leaves behind a legacy as a great husband and father!  My love to his entire family and all his wonderful friends!!!

Our wonderful memories of Ryan will endure forever.  His passion for fishing was never ending … his face would light up when he talked about fishing, whether it was stories of him sneaking out as a child to fish in his john boat without his parents permission or memorable fishing trips with his dad deep into the Gulf .  Ryan was an exceptional person with the type of passion and enthusiasm that brought smiles and happiness to everyone around him … he will be greatly missed.

Hearing the news of Ryan's passing is simply surreal.  I have known Ryan as long as I've known Craig (42 years).   I remember working with Ryan at the first Checkers Craig opened in St Pete.   Even when things would get crazy, Ryan had a way of making you laugh.   Ryan was an amazing person.   I know Craig and Jan were just so proud of their son.  It is just shocking that someone should leave us at such a young age with so much life left to live.  

Life is precious.   Life is a gift.  Life is fleeting.

Ryan was a colleague and friend.  Over the many years of knowing Ryan his contributions to the company’s success were far too many to track. He did his work with passion for food, people and his family. He made you laugh and wonder how he could be so creative given the tight margins he was asked to operate within. He created magic and made people feel special with his products and his personality. 

My heart goes out to Heather, their children and the entire family as I can’t imagine the pain you are experiencing. We were blessed to have had him and we will remember how special Ryan was to all and how great he could make everyone feel.

Ryan was one of the greats I had the pleasure to work with. Always ready to help, never afraid to roll up his sleeves, with a ready laugh on hand. Just two foodies having fun, coming up with great ideas at the National Restaurant Show this year where I snapped this pic.

Such a goof – such a wonderful, kind goof!  My 6 years at Checker and Rally’s were, no doubt, made better, happier, and more fun because of this wonderful man – aptly named JOY!
Wow – I can’t fathom that he has gone home to God and Presley at such a young age.  I know we are not to question the ways of God, but, damn – this is hard to comprehend.
To Heather and the boys, Ryan’s parents and family, our “family” from Checkers and everyone who was touched by his infectious smile and remarkable presence, I can only say that we are each the better for having known him and that is the mark of a life well-lived, albeit too short.

I am so very sorry that Ryan has passed.   There must be something appropriate to say about the loss of a child  even if they are an adult, but I can't think of what words can help lessen the pain.  God bless your family.

To the entire Joy Family,  I am so sorry for your loss.  I met Ryan 10 years ago when interviewing for a job at Checkers/Rally's.  While in the lobby waiting for the multiple interviews to start, a handsome, well dressed guy walked through.  He had energy and charisma.  I was hoping he was  not one of the people I was interviewing with as he was a bit intimidating.  Just too cool!  Ryan was the first person I talked to.  Could  not have have been more disarming, humble, polite and kind.  I thought this guy has every reason to be full of himself and he is not, at all.  Cannot believe this news. Ryan and his family welcomed me to the Checkers & Rally’s family when I joined the company in 2013. Every interaction with Ryan, who was an amazingly creative and kind person, affirmed that I made the right decision in joining Checkers. Two of my fondest memories are working with Ryan at the Checkers on Ulmerton in Clearwater and on Hwy 19 in Pinellas Park. I will also cherish the conversation we had after my last food showing at Checkers just a short time ago. When I listen to Santana’s song “Earth’s Cry, Heaven’s Smile”, I will think of you, Ryan. You will be missed.

I met Ryan when he was a pledge at our fraternity at the University of Alabama. He was awesome and a great addition to our group of guys. He became my "little brother" that year. He was always kind, hard working, and smart. And to the disappointment of many, he was very smitten with Heather who would come visit. Prayers for you Heather and the kids. We lost a great one.

Will miss you my dear friend. You always made time to see us when we visited. Your smile and kind nature and being a wonderful family man set the bar!

It’s hard to meet a kinder person. I always said what an honor it is to know the Joy family. To say the words, Ryan will be missed, still can’t capture the amazing man he was. I know there is an eternal life, God needed Ryan and I pray for the entire family as they process this loss. I got to know Ryan in the basement of the fraternity houses of Tuscaloosa. He had an effortless swagger, a great laugh and was just an all around great guy to be around.
