

The Rev. Vernon F. Squire, age 96, predeceased by parents Lillian E. Scheninger and Sgt. Kenneth W. Squire, survived by his wife, Virginia A. Squire, daughters Cynthia. L Doty (James) of Hallandale Beach, FL, and Rebecca F. Squire of Milford, CT, son Barry H. Squire (Carolyn) of Sarasota, FL, 3 grandchildren Sean L. Squire (Erin) of St. Petersburg, FL, , Katherine V. Capone (Michael), of Atlanta, GA and Sarah C. Zuniga (Luis), of Sarasota, FL, a great granddaughter Sophie Capone of Atlanta, GA and a sister Ms. Nancy Bader (of Cicero, NY).
Pastor Squire graduated from Syracuse University in 1948, with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts, and from The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia in 1951 with an M Div degree. Pastor Squire also completed an Intern Year of Pastoral Clinical Education at Meyer Memorial Hospital in Buffalo, NY in 1962. He served parishes in Germantown, NY, Niagara Falls, NY, Dunkirk, NY, Brewster, NY, as well as serving as Director of the Lutheran Inner Mission Society in Rochester, NY and Protestant Chaplain at Monroe Monroe Community Hospital in Rochester, NY. He retired in January of 1990, wintering in Florida for six months and returning to Pittsford, NY for the summer.
Pastor Squire also served the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in several other capacities, as a member of the Synodical Committee on Luther League , and also twice as Synodical Advisor to the Synodical Luther League Convention, and also as a member of the Upstate New York Synodical Examining Committee for fifteen years. He also pioneered in the introducing of Confirmation camps in the Upstate New York Synod, as well as supervising Interns for twenty years, and being an adjunct member of the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary Faculty. For several years he also served as Pastoral Consultant to Bishop Perry of the Upstate New York Synod.
In retirement he was involved in Model railroading, holding membership in the Rochester model Railroad Club, Suncoast Model railroad Club in Largo, FL, as well as volunteering as a docent at the New York Museum of Transportation. He also became interested in Shaker studies, presenting a power point program about Florida Shakers at a Shaker Seminar, which presentation was also published in the “American Communal Societies Quarterly.” He has also made additional power point presentations on ‘The Witches of Salem,” “Civil War and railroads” “ Dead Sea Scrolls,” and “Comparison of Shakers, Oneida Community and Mormons.” In Florida, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, he taught a study of the lectionary for several years, and also a course on The Apocrypha. At the New York Museum of Transportation he also presented a power point “Rochester, The Erie Canal and Subway”. In Largo he also led weekly Studies on the Scripture Lessons, as well as another power point on “History of Lutherans in the United States.” He also presented a power point on the Apocrypha for an adult Sunday School class.
Memorial Service will be held in Rev. Vernon's honor 11am February 10, 2024 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 455 Missouri Ave N, Largo, FL.
