William Raymond Redwood MD, PhD

William was born on July 27, 1942, in Pontypridd, Mid Glamorgan, Wales, to Blodwen and Stanley Redwood. He graduated from secondary school in Pontypridd and went on to earn both a BA and a PhD in Physics from Queen’s College, Cambridge University, where he studied at the renowned Cavendish Laboratory.

He immigrated to the United States in 1967 and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Virginia, where he conducted groundbreaking work in the biophysics of cell membranes. He later became a full professor at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. At the age of 35, William made the courageous decision to leave academia and pursue medicine, enrolling at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He remained at Johns Hopkins for his internship, residency, and fellowship in Oncology, becoming board certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Radiation Oncology.

In 1987, William relocated to Clearwater, Florida, where he enjoyed a highly successful career in Radiation Oncology for more than 26 years. He served as Medical Director of the Lykes Radiation Center at Morton Plant Hospital and was an active member of ASTRO, the American Society for Radiation Oncology. Over his 40-year career, he was widely respected for both his clinical excellence and leadership.

William rededicated his life to Christ in 1990 after battling a severe case of Guillain-Barré Syndrome. This personal experience profoundly shaped his approach to patient care, deepening his compassion and empathy for those facing serious illness.

He had a lifelong passion for investing, travel, history, and science. An avid traveler, he explored destinations around the world, including Norway’s North Cape, Greece, Istanbul, Europe, and Alaska. He deeply loved animals and shared his life with many beloved pets over the years, including cats, dogs, tortoises, rabbits, hedgehogs, and even a bat.

William was also committed to philanthropy and established the William R. Redwood and Nancy P. Dalos Fund for Brain Tumor Research at Johns Hopkins, reflecting his dedication to advancing cancer research.

He married Nancy P. Dalos, MD, on January 12, 1984, and they shared 42 devoted years together. He was a loving and proud father who cherished time with his sons, Chris and Owen.

William is survived by his wife, Nancy P. Dalos, MD; his sons, W. Owen Redwood, PhD, and Christopher Redwood PhD, JD; his daughters-in-law, Latoya Redwood (Anderson) and Katherine Petty; his grandchild, Neriah Eliyanah Redwood; his sister, June Evans; and his beloved cats, Penny and Ollie. He is also fondly remembered alongside cherished pets Snuggs the cat, Mika the dog, and Konan the cat. He was preceded in death by his parents, Blodwen and Stanley Redwood.

A devoted husband, father, physician, mentor, and friend, William was adored by his family, colleagues, patients, and all who knew him. While his family mourns his passing, they will continue to celebrate his extraordinary legacy of faith, compassion, intellect, and love.

A funeral service will be held at the Episcopal Church of Ascension, located at 701 Orange Ave, Clearwater, FL, 33756, on January 9, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. A committal service will follow at Serenity Funeral Home & Serenity Gardens Memorial Park, 13401 Indian Rocks Rd, Largo, FL, 33774, from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Morton Plant Mease Healthcare Foundation in honor of Dr. Redwood's lifelong dedication to advancing medicine, innovation, and compassionate patient care.
