Under his birth name, Atef Genadry, Alfred was born in Cairo, Egypt, on April 14th, 1949. He and his family immigrated to the United States in 1962 as refugees fleeing the rule of Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser. The family settled in Brooklyn, New York, where he worked in his uncle’s quilting business while attending school full time. He would eventually go on to attend New York City Community College, obtaining a degree in Electrical Technology.
In 1971, Alfred began work in the computer systems department at Unit Two of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in Buchanan, New York, just months before the plant’s reactor first went online. He would continue serving the plant in this capacity for 44 years, eventually rising to the head of his department and earning recognition as one of the company’s most trusted and valuable assets.
Alfred was best known for bringing humor and intrigue to everything he touched. He worshipped the music of Elvis Presley and reveled in the comedy of Abbott and Costello. He was fascinated with the design and development of experimental military aircraft. Whenever anyone mentioned astronauts and the space program, he would refuse to change topics until the brilliant work of NASA engineers was acknowledged. He loved getting people excited about technology, and he never missed an opportunity to tell a good story.
Alfred is survived by his son Michael; his sister Marlene; his brothers Peter and Elias; and his mother Georgette.
A Funeral service will be held at 10:00am PT, August 12th, 2017, at Palm Eastern Mortuary in Henderson, Nevada. He will be buried alongside his beloved wife, Colleen, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident on January 10th, 2011.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Alfred’s name to the Electrical Engineering Fund at UCLA’s Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. The Fund provides scholarships, classroom resources and laboratory equipment for the benefit of students looking to pursue a career in Electrical Technology.
