I wish I had spent more time with you and auntie Frances to know the many sides of you better. You are such a kind, generous and honest person, I want to become someone that you would feel proud of.

Dear Uncle Anthony,
I came to say goodbye, yet I still felt your presence, very vividly, as if it was yesterday.  Your very characteristic laughter still echoes in my ear. I am grateful for all the moments we shared and memories we treasured.
Christmas of 1993, 2 years after I transferred as an international student from Shanghai, China to Seattle, Washington, you and auntie Frances invited my sister Vivian, Jean and me to spend the Christmas holiday with you in New Jersey.  When I received the airline ticket from you, the excitement was beyond imagination.  Have I ever told you, my other international friends were all very envious of me?
During the Christmas holiday, you cooked for us.  Your gourmet food was delicious and incomparable.  Every morning, you chauffeured us to New Jersey Transit bus stop so that we can experience the magic Christmas in NYC; and every night, you waited patiently at the same bus stop to pick us up.   You brought us to visit friends, places, and yummy restaurants.  Thank you for your love and care.  The sweet memories of that one special Christmas holiday at your house have everlastingly lighted up my life.   
In 1996, I got married in Seattle and then relocated to Connecticut due to my husband's job.  For so many years, the Thanksgiving feast and party at your Boonton Town NJ house was the most attractive event I had been looking forward to.  Every year, not only had we enjoyed a full course of delicious Thanksgiving meal, but also, you and auntie Frances always packed a lot for us to bring home which would last for another week.  I remembered one of the dishes I brought home ‘shredded abalone and pork sautéed with preserved mustard' (In Chinese, it's called ‘Bao Yu Rou Si Chao Zha Cai').  I tried to reproduce the dish myself according to your recipe, but never got as successful and delicious.  I could still taste it in my dream…and your famous shrimp toast too, oh, they just melted in my mouth…
In summer of 2011, my whole family was so happy to see you and auntie Frances in good spirit and health at your Vegas house.  You took us to a nearby Casino Restaurant, we all enjoyed the time together, and the food, especially Elise and Aaron, who had never tasted such a big variety of deserts and ice creams. They claimed in unison it was the best meal they had in Vegas, and they remembered even to this day.
Uncle Anthony, for your kindness and thoughtfulness, I am forever grateful.   For your love and care, I will always keep in my heart.  
In loving memory, I am singing a song ‘Make Me a Channel of Your Peace', dedicated especially to you, my beloved uncle Anthony,  somehow, somewhere, I believe you can still hear us…
Knowing that you are embraced in God's arms, He will bless you and keep you.

Thoughtful, kind and generous, those are the words come into my mind when I think of Uncle Anthony.
Uncle Anthony and Auntie Frances provided me the opportunity to come to the U.S.  For that I am forever grateful. I arrived in 1987 and spent my first summer in Santa Barbara, Ca. While I enjoyed my summer camp and the beauty of Santa Barbara, I was still getting used to American food. I received my very first care package from Uncle Anthony and Auntie Frances. It was a box filled with delicious Chinese goodies. Though I had never mentioned anything to them, they knew I missed Chinese food. Many years have passed since that day, but the memory of receiving that special package will never fade away.
In 1993, Uncle Anthony and Auntie Frances invited my sister Vickie, Jean and me to spend Christmas holiday with them. They paid the airline tickets and spoiled us every single day. We had so much fun cooking, shopping and going to parties with them.  One morning we woke up very late. The house was quiet. When we came to the dining area, there was an elaborate breakfast waiting for us. Then we saw a note. It said” Good morning, please enjoy your breakfast. We went for grocery shopping. Will be back soon” We sat down, love and gratitude filled our hearts.
Uncle Anthony and Auntie Frances were the first to meet my husband Freddie, even before my Mom and Dad. Knowing that my parents were still in China, they spent time with Freddie, talking to him and getting to know him. After their first meeting, Freddie said to me: “I didn't know I had to answer so many questions!” A year later, Freddie and I got married. We were so honored to have Uncle Anthony and Auntie Frances at our wedding, especially when they walked down the aisle as our God parents in our wedding ceremony.
After they moved to Las Vegas, Freddie, Brigette and I had the chance to visit them few times. Uncle Anthony always treated us great food in great restaurants. One day he took us to a wonderful Chinese restaurant. He ordered a lot of food, including a giant lobster cooked with ginger and scallion. Freddie and I always wanted to treat Uncle and Auntie, but we were not very successful. At the end of the meal, when they were talking to me and Brigette, Freddie seized the opportunity, got up and tried to get the bill from the server.  Well, he was told that it was already taken care of by Mr. Chang. 
My daughter Brigette still remembers how Uncle Anthony spoiled her with all of her favorite desserts: Chocolate cake, cheese cake, ice cream, cookies and etc…… It became her favorite memories of Uncle Anthony.
It is an honor for me to be able to take part in Uncle Anthony's Memorial Service on October 4, 2014. I am especially grateful that I was able to provide live music for the whole service. Music has the power to convey the feelings and evoke emotions that words cannot. I feel so privileged to be able to pay my tribute to Uncle Anthony and express our love for him through music. Uncle Tony was like a marvelous grandfather to me. We shared a love for fiery food, fast cars and geography. I remember he took me to numerous sports car dealerships and bought me models of the cars we liked best. Every time we visited Las Vegas, we would go to a buffet and eat a lot, we also would quiz each other about international capitals. When he was sick, I really enjoyed writing him letters and he would always respond. I will miss him very much and am glad that he is not in pain any longer.

Thank you all for coming today. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Auntie Frances' niece. I know that uncle tony would be so happy to see you all here. I think you can all imagine the big smile he would have on his face. He probably wouldn't have wanted such a fuss to be made over him, but he would also have been extremely grateful and honored that you have come to pay tribute to his life. When talking with Auntie Frances about this service, she really wanted it to be a celebration of his life and a sharing of memories. So I know it means so much to her that so many of you are here today and so many of you will be speaking today and sharing your stories.
 Qing Zhao, Anthony's cousin, will start with a reading. We will now have a few moments of reflection to remember Anthony in our own way, whether through prayer, a blessing or simply a remembering of memories.
 I have to say, that when I was little, I was actually pretty scared Uncle Tony. I was a pretty shy and self-conscious kid growing up, so Uncle Tony's directness and teasing sense of humor was pretty intimidating to me. He had this way of asking questions and testing me about my knowledge on certain topics, in medicine we call it ‘pimping', and I would always get so flustered and never answer anything correctly. But over time, either he mellowed or I got better at answering his questions, because he wasn't intimidating anymore and our relationship changed. And I came to really appreciate those very qualities of directness and honesty. I really valued his opinions and the advice he gave me about my life. Most recently he has been the voice telling me to slow down, not work too hard, enjoy life more. I remember his generosity – the delicious meals they cooked, the fancy restaurants they treated me to, and of course the trip to China that Andy and I were so fortunate to have gone on with them.
 This past week I've had the chance to talk with Auntie Frances and others about his life and I realize that there is so much I did not know about him. So it's been so great to learn about it and an honor for me to be able to share a little bit of it with you all today. Anthony was born in Shanghai in 1937. His family was actually living in Hong Kong, but his mother went to Shanghai to deliver him because it was thought that the medical care was better there. His father was a businessman and went into business providing transportation of materials into China via the Burma Route during the Japanese war. So he spent some of his early childhood in Rangoon and then went to Calcutta to escape the Japanese invasion. He was quite young when he was in Calcutta – maybe 5 or 6 and attended a Jesuit school. It was there that he was given the English name of Anthony by the Jesuit clergy. The family eventually moved back to Hong Kong and then his father passed away in 1949 – He was 12 years old. His mother eventually remarried and moved away, but Anthony stayed in Hong Kong and attended boarding school there. As most of you know, he loved to eat. One time, his love of food got the better of him and he got hepatitis from curried squid he got from a street food vendor. he never forgot that Cynthia and Daniels' mother brought him to the hospital and basically saved him. He always thought of her as one of the most important people in his life.
 Just a little side note about Anthony's father that I thought was interesting. His father was put imprisoned in Chungking by the chief of the Chinese secret service – Lieutenant Tai Li who was very ruthless and powerful leader during the Chinese-Japanese war. Apparently, Tai Li was jealous that a woman he was interested in, was more infatuated with Uncle Tony's father so he had him put in prison. His father was immediately released after Tai Li died in an airplane crash in 1946. 
Anthony went to Germany in 1957, his decision to move there was mostly influenced by one of his uncles who studied in Germany and advised him that it was a good place to go, especially because the school tuitions was practically free. He studied German language there, went to Darmstadt and then to Berlin for his Doctor in Engineer, specializing in Mechanics. There he made many friends and learned many important life skills - how to smoke, drink beer, cook fried rice and cultivate his lifelong love of German cars. His German friends have told him that he is more German than most Germans. In 1967, he took a faculty position at Stevens institute of Technology in Hoboken New Jersey. where he stayed for the next 30 years on faculty. It sounds like he had quite a reputation there for being tough on his students and sometimes even making the young women cry. One story was that a student in the class complained that the coursework was too much. Uncle Tony took a quarter out of his pocket and said to the student?, “Here is the money for you to call your mother and tell her that school is too tough, I want to come home.” Despite his toughness, He was clearly loved and admired by his students as he won the alumni teaching award in 1980.
 I'm not sure how many of you know how Anthony met Frances. One of his cousins thought they would be a good match and she wanted to set them up. The cousin's husband went to Yale with my Uncle Frank, Frances' brother. So she invited both of them to a Chinese New year's party. uncle tony called up Frances before the party and asked if she wanted to ride together to the party. It turns out that the party was Poughkeepsie New York, which was about a 2.5 hour drive for both of them. It sounds like he was really hoping for a long car ride to get to know her. Anyways, frances said no, she didn't need a ride. playing hard to get - One of her friends later said, ‘why wouldn't you drive up with him, he drives a Porsche!!” I guess she didn't need the Porsche to be impressed, because after the party they started dating and were married just 10 months later. After getting married they lived in Brooklyn with my grandmother. She and Uncle Tony did a lot of cooking during that time. They would experiment making dough together for dumplings - Lots of discussion about the optimal temperature of the water - on hot water vs cold water –they had a great time together, there was a lot of laughing and a lot of discarded dough. In Germany, there's a saying that one has to build at least one house in one's lifetime. So he set out to design his own house in Boonton Township, New Jersey and had one of his students manage the building of it. This for me, I have really distinct memories of that house. .I remember in college going to their beautiful home in the woods with the sloped lot in the back with this great forest view. I couldn't always go home for Thanksgiving and they always invited me over - had the biggest Thankgiving parties – of course they both cooked an elaborate, gourmet, 10 course feast.
They moved to Las Vegas in . I think their life settled into a very nice routine until his health issues became so burdensome. I know This last year has been difficult for both auntie frances and tony, but even up until our last visit with him in August he was smiling, enjoying visiting with the kids and telling stories. He even conned one of his caregivers into letting him drive his new Audi Q5 around the block when Auntie Frances was out of the house.
 My son, Benjamin and Uncle Tony shared a very special bond. The two of them could spend hours talking about all kinds of different topics – from sports to geography to cars. I am so grateful that my children were able to know him and I will always remember his generosity, his sense of humor and love. One of the things that I will always remember about Uncle Anthony was his love for Frances. It was a marriage that I admired and looked up to. Despite his tough exterior, he was always so tender and gentle with her. It was the way he looked at her, tucked her hair behind her ear - they were so very lucky to have had what they had. I wanted to close with a letter that my cousins in Sweden - Ulrika and Sigrid Lin sent me to read at this service:

Dear Uncle Tony or as we say: Farbror Tony, We are at the moment sitting at Sigrid's kitchen table talking about memories of you and a couple of words come to mind: 
• Generosity We were always welcome to visit you and as you liked good food you took us to some of the best restaurants. 
• Family You and Faster Frances introduced us to our grandpa and grandma for the first time, when you invited us for a trip to Hong Kong and Singapore. This meant a lot to us and we will always be grateful for that. You also took us to China together with our cousins, which brought us all closer together. 
• Honesty You were always straight forward and had strong opinions. However, you were always right (or at least you thought so : ) ). 
• Caring You thought that it was important that we did well in life. For example you let us know what you thought were best for us in education and big decisions in life. You babysat us even though Sigrid cried all the time : ).
 • Faith Even though you had opinions in our choices, you always had faith in us and encouraged us to do our best.
 • Adventurous Travelling all over the world, where you often invited us to join. When we went to Russia, there was a big storm so the roof tiles were flying in the wind. You let us go down sand dunes in Dun Huang, getting sand in ears and noses. You also let Sigrid drive your car in New York and you survived. Most adventurous of all; you both came to Luleå, Sweden above the Polar Circle to visit Ulrika and went dogsledding.
 • Fighter You fought to the end against your illnesses.
 We are so happy that we visited you last year and in a way we feel like we were with you during your last weeks as we sent photos of our families for you to see. We will miss you and cherish all our memories we had together.

October 4, 2014 memorial delivered in Las Vegas, NV for Uncle Tony Chang
 My name is Wah Chen, and my brother Jay and I are here on behalf of the entire Chen Family. My father, Tom Chen and his brothers Peter and David Chen grew up with Uncle Tony. Our family wanted to relay our memories of the remarkable Anthony Chang entitled “Encounters with An Irascible Truth Teller”... 
Tom Chen, our Father and a Childhood Friend of Uncle Tony's: “In the 1940's our mothers were close social friends in Calcutta, India. By extension the kids became playmates. We met practically every weekend on the soccer field. Tony and older brother Michael formed one side, I and my older brother David on the other. Tony and I could hardly keep up. Tony's face would flush red, a feature that became a trade mark later on certain occasions. We decided to cull the Rhesus monkeys that roamed our backyards. Tony helped in digging a pit. We hoped the monkeys would fall in and be trapped. Of course none did. Our families parted after the war ended. Tony migrated to HK and we to NYC. Our path crossed in the 1950's when I visited Darmstadt, Germany where Tony was studying. He cooked a delicious meal of handmade Chinese noodles. This culinary skill, hitherto unknown to me, rivaled his PhD in engineering. For some reason we wanted to see the Arctic Circle. On our way we met a Norwegian student who invited us to his home. Our host marveled at Tony's command of German. He was more German than most Germans. On the hand I spoke good English and little Chinese. A decade or so later Tony landed in NYC accompanied by a Porsche. He was to become a Herr Professor in which he excelled. The car also came in handy. We had Tony ferry girls from the city to our parties in our house in Yonkers. A toll collector at the Saw Mill River Parkway booth asked him whether he was in the slave girl business. We were in Taiwan in the late 60's when Tony courted Francis. We did attend the formal wedding dinner. Francis' mother sat next to us. She wondered why Tony' last name was Chang and Michael was a Ting. The explanation: Tony was lent to an aunt's family who had no descendant and thus a different surname. No doubt a puzzle also for others. Tony remains in our memory as an irascible person who did not minced his words. He had definite opinions and likes. Beneath a sometimes gruff surface he was softie who would help when the need arose. He was a steadfast friend. We will miss him.” --Tom
 Wife of Tom, Margaret Chen: “...Tony reminds me of the Old Testament God, Almighty, All Just, All Demanding, Intolerant of Human Weaknesses, yet when you really know him, he embodied the traits of an ever loving New Testament God, All Love, All Accepting, Forever Loyal. I remember when Dad was worried when our four children were going into their college years began, he would pull him aside and offered help saying he has money in the bank and Dad can ask for as much as he wanted! Tony was also very loyal to PoPo, Dad's mother Amy Liu, visiting her frequently and commiserated with her over whatever she was displeased with in her life.” --Margaret 
Eldest Son of David Chen, Roy: “My first recollection of Uncle Tony, was then one and only time I saw my father play golf. It was Dad and I in a golf cart and Uncle Tony and Auntie Frances in the other. We were playing somewhere in the Bronx, I was probably 5 or so. I don't remember much about the round. Only later did I realize that I really loved golf. Later on I had the opportunity to play golf with Uncle Tony. The Germanic side in Uncle Tony showed up at the golf course, my two recollections are when I was supposed to meet Uncle Tony, Uncle Eddie and Gary Wong somewhere in Western New Jersey to play. Uncle Tony needed to be the first out, so this meant arriving at the course in the dark. For the life of me, I could not find the golf course. Eventually, when I got there, it was 15 minutes or so late, I deliberated whether to go out and find them or go home. The fear of Uncle Tony got into me and I drove home with my tail between my legs. Uncle Tony liked to walk the course. Next, we played we were in a pretty close match and we got down to the last hole, Uncle Tony did not need a scorecard, he had the math all figured out, he stood by the flag, and in that booming voice said “you don't want to miss that putt, since it would give you a par and a win” needless to say, I missed the putt." Talk about intimidation!! Uncle Tony drove fear into me with that loud booming voice and at times gruff exterior, though in my heart I knew he cared about us and wanted the best for each of us. Uncle Tony, may your drives go long and straight and you 1 putt all the greens” -- Roy 
Son of David Chen, Troy Chen: “I will always remember Uncle Tony. I have never forgotten the one and only time I was in his car, an early 1980s VW Scirocco, in the back seat, with him driving like a maniac, but laughing and enjoying the trip while hurling around the tight corners of mountain roads near his NJ home. My fingernail marks are still in that car somewhere.” --Troy 
Son of Peter Chen, Brian Chen: “Troy - I think we might have been in the same Scirocco! To this day, I remember getting into his car after eating a meal at a mall. He drove like an absolute madman cutting in and out of traffic. I remember thinking - am I going to die? And how can he drive so fast and laugh so hard at the same time! That was my first and last ride with him. My favorite memories, though, were the Thanksgivings we had at their house in Boonton. He was so generous in spirit and loved having us all to his beautiful house. I can picture his smile as I type this. He had the coolest things - like those metal speakers! And the food - the food! Absolutely incredible.” --Brian Peter Chen, childhood friend: “My memories of Uncle Tony....date back to India where I was just a pipsqueak hanger on. We again met when we traveled together with Auntie Shirley in 1960 in Germany and were most impressed with his knowledge of the US and the world in general as well as his prodigious memory. He was most serious and was as acknowledged lover of all things German, especially cars. I used to call him (not to his face!) our Nazi in Chinese guise. He also had a most generous nature. He also scared us adults. We will all miss him.” --Peter 
Son of Tom Chen, Dehan Chen: “I think Uncle Tony is where many of us developed a fondness for German cars. More recently, I remember when the boys were in Vegas, and we were hoping that Uncle Tony would meet us on the strip, but we were all too afraid to ask him! Even in Vegas, Uncle Tony was so hospitable- taking us to a great Chinese restaurant there.” –Dehan
 Daughter of Peter, Liz Chen: “Uncle Tony was like The Phantom (of the Opera); Fierce on the outside but full of love and generosity inside. I think everyone has memories of his booming voice with the German accent and his impatient nature, but while Uncle Tony and Auntie Frances lived in New Jersey, they were so kind to our family. The Chen Schmidt gang has many fond memories of Uncle Tony. He and Auntie Francis were a great source of entertainment for our family when we first moved to New Jersey. Picnics in the forest, outings to pick strawberries, trips to six flags, and of course lots of food, sumptuous meals, home-cooked or at many a restaurant. Uncle Tony and Auntie Francis always had something fun planned for us. We would follow behind them in our van and despite Uncle Tony's reputation of liking to drive fast, he would make sure we were not far behind and we never did get lost! Uncle Tony was full of life and generosity. His hearty laugh and big smile is forever in our memories!” --Liz 
Son in law of Peter, Michael Schmidt: “I have many fond memories of our family visits to Auntie Frances and Uncle Tony! In the early stages of living in the U.S. and having an expanded family with 3 little kids, your beautiful house in the tranquil setting quickly became a frequently visited spot for us. With Uncle Tony's strong understanding of European and Asian cultures, many interesting conversations were enjoyed over an always delicious home-cooked Chinese meal. As you may recall, Uncle Tony introduced me to a game he knew well; golf. He didn't hold back sharing ways for me to improve both strategy and technique – and giving me his precious Ping Zing golf set certainly helped me along as well (I love it and still play with it). Since then, I've had so many great golf moments and now am able to bond with Sebastian, although I hit 3 drives every time he hits one! Uncle Tony will always have a place in my heart!” --Michael
 Daughter of Tom Chen, Ming Chen: “Our social life as kids revolved around each other with the Chinese gourmet Boonton Thanksgivings firmly etched in my memories of a golden childhood. I remember the cool speakers and how modern Uncle Tony's house was- contrasted by the detailed Indonesia exotic mural that hung down floor to ceiling in the living room. Mom said she remembered Uncle Tony listening and talking patiently (in a loud booming voice) to Popo, and I have the image in my mind too. Uncle Tony died as he probably would have preferred to- in privacy.” --Ming
These reminiscences of Uncle Tony relay what a big and imposing character he was for Jay, me and all of our cousins in our childhood and for his own peers like Tom and Peter Chen. Part of what made Uncle Tony such a rich human being is his life partner Auntie Francis. Where Uncle Tony was uncompromising, Auntie Francis was flexible. While Uncle Tony was forceful, Auntie Francis was gentle. I want to take this opportunity to tell Auntie Francis that Jay Dehan Ming and I along with our cousins, Michael, Liz, Brian, Roy, Troy, and Alex welcome you at any of our Thanksgiving tables any time. We love you, and are here for you. May God Bless You today and give you the strength, resolve and peace to live healthfully so forth thru the years. Love, W A H

Tribute to Anthony Chang at the Memorial Service

Anthony called me ?? (Sui Mei) and I called Anthony ??? (Second brother). I called his brother Michael, ??? (Big brother).  He was a very close family friend; we we considered him to be a member of the Chu's family.         

My father's health prevented him from coming and taking part in this Memorial Service but his heart is with us at this time.  He would like me to say that he has lost a good friend and a very dear brother.  Anthony called my father, ??? (Brother Chu).  When I was young, I was very confused with the relationship.  Anthony called my father ?? and I called Anthony ??? Well, we are just one big family. 

My father and my mother met at Anthony's Parents house in Burma.  During the Sino-Japanese War, my father worked for Anthony's father.  My mother was Anthony and Michael's governess when they were little. Anthony always called my mother ?? (Teacher).

After the war, my parents moved back to Hong Kong.  Anthony attended the Lingnam Primary School and Pui Ching Middle school.  He was a boarding student.  On the weekends, he always went swimming at the beach with us.  I remembered him as a very skinny tall young man, always hanging out with my father.  We were too young for him at that time.  

I know a lot about Anthony from my mother.  She always praised him as an honest and kind person.  My mother would said, “ ??, ?????”. When my mother came to the US many years ago, she tripped when she got off the plane.  She ended up in a hospital with a cast on her leg.  She always reminded us that Anthony was the first one to visit her before any of her own children showed up.

But she also said, if one wanted to go sightseeing, Anthony was not a good companion.  When she was in NYC the first time, Anthony would introduce the names of the places to her while driving.  That was the end of the sightseeing.  However, going shopping in the kitchen section in a store was a place where Anthony would love to spend his time.

Anthony and Frances always kept in touch with my parents.  They visited Hong Kong on a regular basis.  Our house keeper knew them very well and she always refers to Frances as the lady who enjoys a cup of coffee after the dinner.

Anthony had always been more than a big brother to me and to all my siblings and had been always there whenever there was a need.   

I began to get to know Anthony after I moved to New Jersey.  My children, Albert and Margaret got to know him when they are growing up.  Every Thanksgiving we always went to Uncle Anthony and Auntie Frances' house for a big Thanksgiving feast.   

My husband, Kevin and my son Albert are with me today.  My daughter, Margaret, cannot come because she is 6 months pregnant.  She would like me to say the following: she will always treasure the memories of the many special occasions spent at their home in NJ and growing up with such a kind and caring uncle. She wishes she could be here to celebrate his memory and sends her love and prayers. 

I would like to share with all of you the Anthony I knew.  He was a Professor and an Engineer who only trusted products from Germany.  He was an honest and caring person with integrity. He loved to cook and enjoyed food.  He liked ?????? (salty fish chicken fried rice).  He was a very dear member of our family.  Anthony, ???, you will always be in our hearts.

For those of you who know uncle Tony very well, you might have heard that uncle Tony and auntie Frances had sponsored one of his nieces to come to the US for higher education. Yeah, that was me, about 23 years ago. Out of the three universities that had granted admission to me, uncle Tony chose U of Louisville for me, partially because of uncle J.T. and auntie Lydia were there, partially because of his concerns that I might never learn to speak English well unless I was thrown into somewhere with the least Chinese population around me. Got the idea? Yeah, I had to speak English ALL the time in mid-west because very few there knew how to speak Chinese! I had since moved to California about 10 years ago. I have to say that uncle Tony was very, very wise. 
He and auntie Frances paid for my tuitions and boarding and food for two whole year until I got into Graduate School in Purdue. I spent every winter break in their house during 1991 to 1995, with all the flight tickets paid, of course, by uncle Tony and auntie Frances. They took me to a ski trip in Vermont, they took me to musicals on Broadway, they took me to special little restaurants in NJ and NYC. Every moment was an eye-opening event for me. For years, his 10-digit home phone was the only one I remembered without having to check my address book. Then in 1999, while my parents could not get the visa to come and attend my wedding, uncle Tony was the one who flew to West Lafayette and handed me to my husband at the wedding. I will never forget that. 
It may sound unbelievable to you, especially to all the Asian parents sitting here, that uncle Tony and auntie Frances did all these for me without any strings attached, I mean, not even the all “A”s or “GPA 3.8 or higher”. In fact, he told me straight in my face back in August when our family came to see him for the last time that it was ridiculous for me to tie the money my daughter Annie gets in the “red envelope” (“hong-bao”) during Chinese New Year with the number of “A”s she's getting in school. He was just such a kind and affectionate uncle/granduncle! We will for sure miss him for his kindness and generosity, and his spirit and courage as he fought with the diseases in his final days. Uncle Tony, thank you so much and we love you very much.

Our dear friend Anthony, for more than sixty years we have been together. Now we will miss so much your discussions - always tolerant and intelligent- and with that your humor and positive way of living. 
Your spirit will last in our mind and we feel with Frances all grief beyond words.
