

Arthur H. Berry, also affectionately known at “Artie,” was born on August 17, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was third of six children born to Arthur Berry and Grace Davis Berry. Artie graduated from West Philadelphia High, a Philadelphia public school. Post high school he joined the United States Air Force and was Honorably Discharged. Artie rose to the rank of Captain in the Philadelphia Police Department and retired in 1991 after 25 years of service. He joined the police force in August of 1966. His first assignment was at the 17th district as a patrol officer and after five years, he advanced to become a Police Investigator in the vice unit. He became a Sergeant and worked as a Patrol Supervisor in the Major Investigations Division – Intelligence Unit. In 1985, he became a Lieutenant and served as Commander, Special Investigations Unit South Detective Division. In 1989, he became Captain and commanding officer of the 17th District, all in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Artie was a loving father, brother, friend and neighbor; he was well loved, which many friends and family acknowledge. Artie was considered the favorite Uncle by his many nieces and nephews. Artie departed this life on June 24, 2013 after a relatively brief bout with lung cancer. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marva; brothers, Ronald, Bernard, and Nathaniel; parents, Arthur and Grace; step-father, Leroy Hodges; and his cat Brandy, his constant companion for 22 years. He leaves to mourn his passing: sisters, Patricia Lee and Lorraine Brandon (Eddie) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; son, Tony Berry (Hiroko) of Seattle, Washington; daughter Linda Lugo (Raimundo) of Fayetteville, North Carolina; and son, Ronald Davis (Janith) of Oakland, California; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and extended family and friends.
