Born May 6, 1931 – May 9, 2018
An American bebop jazz musician whose career spanned over five decades, and who had the opportunity to play with many prominent West and East jazz artists, will be remembered by those that met and knew him as a good friend and somebody you could count on in times of need…a very cool person indeed. He loved art, especially Picasso's work. In the beginning, August started out as an art major at the University of Denver. Out of high school he later realized that playing drums with a bebop influence was something that he could really see as a career. He practiced eight hours a day for four years. While at Denver High school he played in the band where he refined his "chops" and at 15, he moved out of his mom and dad's house to live on his own. August managed to land his first job in a jazz house in Denver while he was still at Denver High. He managed to land his first gig by telling the band leader that he was 18 years of age. And there his career began. A few years later he joined the Air Force and auditioned and landed a position as a drummer for the Air Force band. It was a perfect relationship as he played band music for the Air Force in the day and at night played jazz music earning a living. He was fortunate enough to make good friends within the business and traveled a lot throughout the United States playing gigs, enjoying life, and becoming friends with a who's who list within the be-bop community. "Buddy", as his good friends would call him, had a passion for living. He enjoyed traveling and spent a good amount of time living between Las Vegas and Hawaii – specifically, Waikiki Beach where one could find him sailing away on the Mai Tai Catamaran, soaking up the sun and listening to music. He loved and enjoyed life to the fullest and tried to spread that energy around to his family and friends. He is survived by his daughter, Dawn Greve, and his son, Miles Greve. He was one of a kind and will be missed enormously by all that knew him. He is in heaven now with all of those that went before him. "I'm sure that my dad is happy now that he has reunited with my mom. He will be greatly missed until we have a chance to reunite. Until then we will miss you dad".
