Daniel “Dan” Dean Miller was born on February 16 in Minot, North Dakota in 1935 and was the third child and son of Andrew and Helen (Timoskovich) Miller. He was an accomplished athlete in Track and Field and Basketball in high school and he led the basketball team to the state championship; still holding the record for most points scored in a single game. Dan worked with his seven siblings in the family restaurant, Andy’s Café, in Crosby, North Dakota. He graduated from Crosby High School as the Salutatorian. Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army as an Information Specialist. He attended the University of Notre Dame, where he participated in the all-male singing group, the Glee Club. He majored in business while at Notre Dame and graduated Cum Laude in 1957. Upon graduating, he hitchhiked to Las Vegas, which became his home for the rest of his life. In 1962, Dan married the love of his life, Mary Jane (Michalec) Miller. Dan and Mary were pillars of the rapidly growing community of Las Vegas and opened their home and hearts to many of the community, especially the Catholic church and many priests. Dan taught mathematics and coached basketball at Bishop Gorman High School, worked at the Dunes, Sands, Stardust, and Tropicana hotels, and started his own business of over 40 years, Professional Tax Service. He was an Enrolled Agent in the State of Nevada and treated his clients like they were his family. Dan’s strong group of friends encouraged him to make a run for the United States Senate in the 70’s. Although unsuccessful, his platform on taxes became the basis for the Tax Payers Bill of Rights. Dan was a founding member of the Notre Dame Club of Las Vegas and served as the club’s first president in 1976. He was an honorary Basque member, an active member in both the Knights of Columbus and the Viatorian Association. He served as the Finance Director in the building of both St. Viator Catholic Churches and the St. Thomas More Parish. Some of his passions included singing, especially Christmas caroling around town to all his family and friends. Dan was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing with his family. His proudest accomplishment was raising his seven children in the faith of God. He always was ready with a smile and a laugh for anyone who knew him. He lived his life full of faith, touching the hearts and hands of everyone he met. Dan passed away on July 28 at age 79 surrounded in prayers by his family. Dan was preceded in death by his brother William and his parents, Helen and Andrew. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary; his siblings, Thomas Jerome “Jerry”, Marion (Joseph) Lenneman, Jean (Robert) Masters, Valerie (Vince) Ames, Rosie (John) Wathen and Mark (Sallee); his seven children, Andrew (Gianna), Valerie, Danielle, Michael (Nancy), Patrick (Jennifer), John (Jaclyn), and Megan (Nicholas) Landis and nineteen grandchildren, Marisa (John) Amann, Cameron, Daniel, Mary Katherine, John, Grace, Julia, Marisol, Josiah, Adam, Landin, Regan, Tatiana, Sarah, Ignatius, Dior, Xavier, Andrew and Zachary.
