Donald ( My Step-Father) Was truely an amazinng man! I loved and adored him , he always had smile on his face and a warmth about him . He will be missed so much by myself and many others . So that's it.  He is gone.

For us classmates, he was all we had of the early memories of our time in Laguna as skinny little kids yearning to be lifeguards and surfers.

His dad was Carl Mays which alone made Don Mays famous for having such a dynamic father.  Carl Mays owned the local ambulance service and was the head of the Lifeguard Service too.  His brother Ron Mays was a memorable guy with the same speech pattern as Don and the same sound to his voice.  We could barely tell them apart, their voices were so similar.

Their father, Carl Mays, entrusted us beach boys to work as lifeguards.  He trusted us.  And we had absolutely NO drownings while working under Carl Mays.  We knew all the hand holds on the cliffs and on the  huge boulders in the coves.  We could enter any dangerous channel and rescue fishermen and tourists who had been swept off the rocks.  He knew that we would all make excellent lifeguards for Laguna's coves.  He hired us local beach boys without pause.  Carl Mays was our lord and master and we were loyal to the core.

During our time in Laguna Beach High School these two Mays brothers were solid characters with their own brand of personality and behavior.  While we were surrounded by bullies these two boys did not have a mean bone in their bodies.  We could depend on them to talk with us and share funny stories and almost all the funny stories and observations were about us.

It was fun to watch him walking around the school with his gorgeous Hawaiian shirts and perfect physicality from his workouts with weights.  Don sculpted himself a great physique.  Most of us watched him closely because he was an example of male beauty.  Many of us tried to emulate him.  I know I did but it didn't work.  I had muscles that did not show themselves no matter how hard I worked out.  We found a place to work out with weights at the Boy's Club downtown on the beach.  We would grunt and push and pull.  Donny had some kind of formula that built great muscles.  My physical form went from skinny to corkscrew to golf bag.  Lawn bowlers had better physical form than I.

Donny Mays was always there to share observations during every school day. He was ready to talk with anyone at all.  He was never a snob. His lips were always showing a grin and his mind was only seeing humor.  He loved his time at Laguna High.  And we subconsciously and quietly loved the daylights out of him.

He is gone.  What a bummer.  We won't forget him.  No way.  He is indelibly etched into our memories.
