Elizabeth Ann Hartman Green peacefully passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 24, 2025, and was called home to be with the Lord at the age of 93. “Betsy,” as she was fondly known, lived a full and active life, cherishing deep and lasting friendships throughout the years. In her last days she was surrounded by family and friends, laughing and smiling, looking at photos and thinking of the many joyful memories of her life.
Elizabeth leaves behind her five children: Robert Jr, Theresa, Patricia, Michelle and Suzanne. She was also a proud grandmother to 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Elizabeth was predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years, Robert Lee Green, and her siblings Joseph, Mary Louise, Margaret and Patricia.
Born on August 15, 1931, in Pittsburgh, PA, Elizabeth spent most of her early youth growing up on the coast in Ventnor, New Jersey. She would often recall those hot summer days, walking on the Boardwalk of Atlantic City, and then running through the soft sand to swim in the warm Atlantic waters of the many beaches located nearby.
In her early twenties, Elizabeth bought her first automobile, a light blue Chevy Styleline, motored west to San Francisco and got a job working for the CIA, but after falling in love and then marrying Robert, a handsome U.S. Marine sergeant, she then dedicated herself to raising a family. When her children came of age she decided to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher, a role in which she positively influenced the lives of countless students over 20 years. She especially enjoyed reading to the students, engaging their minds and imagination, and then discussing what the story meant to them. Betsy also continued her own scholastic pursuit, achieving a Masters Degree in Education.
With her husband, Bob, who became a music teacher and band director, she would help organize tours for high school band members to travel to Europe, where they performed in Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Italy, giving all who participated memories of a lifetime. They also travelled to Mexico and Hawaii for concerts.
Betsy had a passion for gardening and playing games, such as bridge, dominoes and mahjong, and also found joy in socializing, dancing and golfing. Even after retiring as a teacher, she and her husband continued to travel and explore the world, whether it be soaking up the sun in Greece, or riding camels in Egypt.
But nothing was more important to her than her family. Betsy and Bob purchased a condo in Mammoth, California and spent glorious snowy days skiing with her loved ones, or bicycling, riding horses and hiking the many trails during the summer months.
A dedicated genealogist, Elizabeth was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), where she held several leadership positions. She was also enamored with the subject of history, both U.S. and World. But one of her hidden passions was learning about geology and nature, where she would take her family across the country, exploring National Parks and museums. She loved looking at the history of our geological landscape: rock formations, earthquake faults, mountains, rivers, lakes and hot springs, and shared her passion with her husband and children.
Elizabeth “Betsy” Green will be remembered lovingly for her warm smile, kind heart and infectious laughter, but one of her strongest traits was being a great listener to everyone around her. Throughout her life, not a day went by without her talking to her children over the phone, listening and, if requested, counseling them and sharing her life experience regarding their lives. She was also excited when friends would call. Many of them wanted to adopt her as “their mom.”
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
