Eugene Bennet Pughe passed away on February 25, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of service, laughter, and a love that stretched across many miles. A proud Vietnam Veteran, he carried his dedication to his country with honor throughout his entire life. Gene was more than just a soldier; he was an amazing Human, Son, Brother, Uncle, and Friend who viewed the world through a lens of friendliness and genuine affection for every person he met.
A man of simple yet profound passions, Gene lived for the "three H's": History, Heritage, and Hospitality. He was a lifelong student of the past, but he lived firmly in the present whenever family was involved. He was famous for his willingness to drive hundreds of miles at a moment’s notice, all for the chance to sit at a crowded table with his loved ones. He had a particular zest for great food, provided it was served exactly how he liked it: fresh and hot.
When he wasn’t sharing a meal or a story, you could find him on the golf course, chasing the perfect swing and enjoying the camaraderie of the game. He treated everyone with a signature warmth that made strangers feel like old friends.
As we say goodbye, we are reminded of the stirring words from one of his favorites, Andy Williams rendition of the Battle Hymn of the Republic: "He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat." Gene answered that trumpet with a life of integrity, and he has now found his eternal rest.
He is survived by family members and friends who will forever miss his frequent visits, his booming laugh, and his unwavering American spirit.
All Glory to our Lord and God Jesus Christ. May our beloved Gene rest in peace!
