Evelyn Janos, 99, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 5, 2019. She was born on September 7, 1920 in Conneaut, Ohio to Sam and Lucy Janos. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, sister Elizabeth, and brother John. Evie, as she was called by family and friends, was an amazing woman who lived a very full and fascinating life. She was a pioneer for women of her time. She graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in patent design, nearly obtained her pilots license, worked for Pratt and Whitney in New York designing airplane jet engines, and travelled extensively throughout the United States and Brazil. Evie lived many years in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania where she was well known in the golfing community as the gold champion for Whitemarsh Valley Country Club. Golf was Evie's passion. She loved competing in tournaments and reminiscing years later about the four holes-in-one she made and the many newspaper articles written about her game. Playing bridge, walking about politics, and following sports (especially the Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles) were other hobbies that Evie enjoyed well into her 90's. Evie was a very generous person who loved her family. She always thanked God for "being so good to her." Evie was a wonderful caretaker for several family members and friends. She had many memories that she shared all the way to the end of her life. Her 99th birthday celebration at Coronado Heights in September was one such happy memory. Great food, music, caring friends, and family made the event a night she appreciated and held dear to her heart.
Rest in peace, Evie. You were loved and will be dearly missed.
Evie is survived by her nephew Grady Jones and family of Lafayette, Indiana; her niece Joie Bloom and family of Henderson, Nevada; cousins Gloria Myers of Phoenix, Arizona, Gail Myers and family of Bellevue, Ohio, and Scott Myers and wife of Phoenix, Arizona; plus many dear friends from Coronado Heights Senior Living and Sun City MacDonald Ranch. After cremation, Evie's remains will be interred at Greenwood Memory Lawn in Phoenix, Arizona. A Celebration of Life, will take place in January at that time.
