I am so sorry to hear of the passing of the best teacher I ever had. Mr. Weinberg was my teacher at Akiva in 7th and 8th grade back in the early 70's. He made American history come alive. I still remember him teaching us the cause of the Civil War was "Southern overaction to minor, unimportant challenges to slavery".  It was on the test, and his tests were never easy. That was over 50 years ago. His history class was right before lunch which lasted 15 minutes followed by 15 minutes  of recess. Mr. Weinberg allowed us to eat lunch during his class just so we could then have a full 30 minutes of recess. He didn't care that we ate lunch during his class as long as we paid attention. Still, eating lunch in a classroom was unprecedented back then. With a full half hour of recess I started a small hockey league out on the snow and ice in the parking lot. When Mr. Weinberg found out, he organized us into a floor hockey team with scheduled practices in a gym or auditorium. We played games against Hillel Day School and a Yeshiva from another city. All this was thanks to Mr. Weinberg volunteering his time for us. And it didn't end there. he also took a few of us to a Red Wings game. But the greatest gift I received from Mr. Weinberg was yet to come.
I became a teacher, and am currently in my 34th year teaching high school AP Physics. I'm 66 years old, but I'm still teaching because I love it and because it so rewarding. I impact over 100 students every year and I send some into various fields of engineering. I have the highest AP scores of all the courses in all of the schools in the district. I tutor college students taking physics, and I am in contact with many former students who reach out to thank me for positive impact I had on their lives. And I owe it all to the role model I had over 50 years ago. The seeds Mr. Weinberg planted in my mind are still bearing fruit. Though he is no longer with us, through me, he continues to impact students and our future.

Mr. Weinberg was a phenomenal teacher and friend to all of us. He taught me how to learn American History and became my favorite class and teacher. Because of Howard I placed out of a year of history in college- CLEP EXAM.

Mr. Weinberg was an Outstanding teacher and friend. His class was my favorite and he encouraged me to learn the material thoroughly. Because of Howard I placed out of a year of history in college (CLEP). He taught for many years at Akiva Hebrew Day School and was beloved by all his students. He was a role model to all of us. Mr. Weinberg was a remarkable teacher, who made history come to life.   I so much enjoyed his class.  Famous lines include:

"Congress does what it does best...NOTHING"

"John C. Calhoun and Fluoride Bono Calhoun"

"Mercantalism- Economic self sufficiency and favorable balance of trade."

Learning about comparative religions and religious persecution as motivators to leave Europe for the New World.

To top it off, going to Olympia Arena together to watch the Red Wings.

All the above are forever memories.

So saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Weinberg, our beloved history teacher at Akiva Hebrew Day School way back when... a true teacher for life. Decades have passed but he still has a place in our hearts as the most passionate teacher who loved his students, demanded excellence (try drawing a seven pointed star on the Australian flag) and integrity ( back to back seating during tests so we couldn't cheat), shared his love for race cars (who drove a stick shift in Detroit?!) and ice hockey (naming his son after Gordie Howe). A teacher who truly made an impact on so many students. We loved him! 
 May Dr. Weinberg's memory be a blessing and may God bring you comfort.

Mr Wienberg not only brought  history to life, he invited us into his life. We knew he was an avid hockey enthusiast, even naming his son after Gordy Howe. We knew he attended the Indy 500 yearly because he loved the race. We knew he loved teaching us, because he showed up daily  and expected us to be our best selves, and to become the people he knew we had the potential to become. When I look at my life and the lives of my classmates at Akiva, I know he was an incredibly successful teacher because he not only taught us history, he taught us how to learn, grow, and to follow our passions.

As a past student of Dr. Weinberg I only have the fondest memories. From the floor hockey team he coached to his amazing brilliance, that we had to close the door and windows so it would not leave the room! I became a Dentist due to him.  His lectures to our class were from his University of Windsor Lectures. He had high expectations of us. The first day I entered his class he said there was no book if you want to pass this you are going  have to take notes. I never received an A in his class but he trained me well in taking notes. I was ready for college. He had no favorites he loved all his students. He was one of the very few and possibly only teacher, who gave me a good foundation in my study habits. I will always remember him. I thank him from the bottom of my heart.

Mr. Weinburg was a great educator.  I was in his economics and history classes.  His unique style of delivery was like no other lecturer I ever encountered.  He kept his students engaged in the topic at hand with a fast paced and witty delivery.  I don't remember many of my teachers, but Mr. Weinburg is fresh in my memory.  He was a good man and very, very passionate about his role as an educator, touching the lives of countless students.  May he rest in peace.

Mr. Weinberg was one of my teachers at Detroit Catholic Central. He made a huge impact on me, and my life. He taught an Economics class. 1985/86 perhaps. His wit, humor, and brilliant sarcasm helped keep my attention. I certainly was not a great student, yet he delivered a message that resonated with me. I needed that, and I have never forgotten how he helped me connect classroom to business and the world around me. I later received my degree in, economics, most assuredly from the semester he taught me at CC.
