The world lost a bright light with the passing of Jon Curtis Avery, who died peacefully on July 29, 2025, at UMC Hospital at the age of 78. Jon was born in Detroit, Michigan, on April 6, 1947, to Alvin and Helen Avery. He carried a spark that would brighten many lives.
Jon found his soulmate and partner for life, Barbara Adams of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, whom he married, beginning a cherished journey together that lasted 55 years.
Jon dedicated 40 years of his career to Northwest Orient Airlines, starting in Detroit, Michigan, then New Orleans, Louisiana, and finally landing in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he retired in 2009. His passion for his work was evident, but it was his joyful spirit that truly defined him. Jon loved to socialize, was a natural jokester, and possessed a radiant smile that could brighten any space.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Barbara; his daughters, Darlene Armstrong (Troy), Cheryl Jacoby (Jared), and Sandra LaLone. Jon's grandchildren—Alyse Armstrong, Cheryl Armstrong, and Kyle Jacoby—were the absolute pride of his life. He is also survived by his brothers, Douglas and Bruce, and their respective families.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to Lutheran Social Services of Nevada.
A memorial service to celebrate Jon's life will take place at 3:00 PM PST on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Palm Eastern Mortuary, located at 7600 S. Eastern Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89123.
