Joseph Louis Schmid, 91, of Henderson, Nevada, passed away January 14th, 2017 at 7:52am at Desert Springs Hospital due to natural causes. He was born February 28th, 1925, in Plainfield, Nebraska. His parents were Louis and Evelyn Schmid. He came from a good size family; four sisters and one brother.
He married Alice Haase, my mother, on November 29th, 1958, and then divorced when I was about 7-years old. She must have known somehow that he passed away, as she also passed on this day. I was born two years later, on August 2nd, 1960. He grew up in Nebraska, where he attended school, and was educated through 12th grade. He served in the US Army during World War II. He was a very loving and caring father. He was a great teacher as well. We used to drive to Arizona and Iowa during the summertime to visit relatives. He was an avid antique collector. He loved to tinker with everything, especially clocks and watches. He loved to repair just about anything, would even try his best, and usually succeed when new things came his way. He had a knack for figuring things out. I think he was even a genius. He loved animals, the outdoors, and puzzles. We went to swap meets almost every weekend, where he would look for antiques and other items of interest. We went to company picnics at various parks in the canyons of California. I can remember catching polliwogs and bringing them home. We also went to Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm on company nights at least once a year. He resided in Southern California for several years. He worked as an Engineer at Hughes Research Laboratories for 30 plus years. After he retired, he continued to work there as a consultant. He lived in Henderson for a year.
He is survived by his daughter, Camille Mandel; son-in-law, Alan Mandel; sisters Mary and Ramona; brother Jerome; three grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
His services are scheduled for February 10th, at 2:00pm at the VA Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada.
