

Leo T. Tan, M.D., 93, a resident of Henderson, Nevada, passed away on November 6, 2013 at St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Siena Campus. Dr. Tan was born in Bandung, Indonesia on October 31, 1920. His parents were Tan Sin Hoat and Oei Djiang Nio. He was the oldest of five children. He was married 60 years to Mary Tan. Dr. Tan attended the University of Medicine in Jakarta and graduated at the age of 31, where he became a specialist in OB/GYN. He opened a private office working six days a week in the evening time, and sometimes having to work until midnight. During the daytime, he was on staff at three different hospitals in Surabaya. Dr. Tan and his wife Mary wanted to learn a sport they could both enjoy after retirement. They decided to take up golf before starting a family. They became passionate about golf and began participating in many tournaments where they collected many (hundreds) of trophies. While he was always a hard-working man, he did take off Wednesday afternoons and Sundays to play golf. All of his kids grew up playing the golf course twice a week. At the age of 50, he immigrated to Birmingham, Alabama with his wife and three children ranging from the ages of 9 to 15 years of age. He got a job at the Jefferson Co. Dept. and at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In 1983, he suffered a stroke which made him decide to retire at the age of 63. After that, he and his wife decided to travel the world. In 1996, Dr. Tan and Mary decided to relocate to Las Vegas because they wanted to be close to their daughter, whom at that time, was in the Air Force. Dr. Tan lived a long and good life alongside his family. Leo T. Tan, M.D. is survived by his wife Mary; children Inri, Tjoan, and Boni; grandchildren Nathan, Megan, Christopher, Amanda, and Alexander; and brother Tjeng Giok Tan. A funeral service will be held Friday, November 22, 2013 at 5:00pm at Palms Eastern Mortuary.
