Mike was a fun & funny guy.  We had good times together at Delta Chi and last summer at Tim Carper’s house.  I know he was looking forward to  the trip ( to  Portugal wasn’t it?) last fall.  He talked a lot about his family, wife, daughters and especially the grandchildren.  Loved those kids.

I first met Mike when we were in school in Caldwell, Idaho. Our families were both recent transplants from the Midwest, and our dads worked together at the local Job Corps. This bond set the stage for a lifelong friendship between Mike and me.

In high school, Mike was a senior when I was a sophomore. He was always good to me in an era when senior guys weren’t always nice to sophomores.

In1977 I pledged the Delta Chi fraternity at Idaho. There was a cohort of high quality Caldwell guys in the house – Steve Van Slyke, Tim Carper, and Mike Wermers and his brother Russ –that influenced my decision to pledge.

Mike and Tim were my first roommates. These wizened upperclassmen had an immediate impact on my habits as they were both serious students. Our room was very quiet after dinner every night while we studied at our desks. There were also a lot of very entertaining bull sessions later in the evening.

 I lived in the fraternity with Mike for two years, after which he graduated and moved to Seattle.. One particular fond memory is of Mike entering and leaving the Delta Chi house regularly, a shoe box full of computer punch cards tucked under his arm, as he walked back and forth to the university computer lab where he would try to get the program to run successfully. It seemed like he always did but not without a significant amount of grumbling.

I  had a long chat on the phone with Mike in October of this year when he told me a story that illustrated the kind of guy he was. Our dads were part of a group of Job Corps retirees who would meet once a month at Mr. V’s in Caldwell for breakfast. The rule for the group was if you missed breakfast this month you had to buy for everybody the next month, so there were very few no shows. One month Mike called the restaurant before the group arrived and paid the bill. My dad still talks about that whenever Mike’s name comes up. 

Mike was a good man and he is already missed by a lot of people.

So sorry to hear of Mike's passing. He was a great friend and co-worker for many years at Boeing. My condolences to his family.

With heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. Wermers. May you find comfort in God's Word and in knowing that others feel your sadness as well.  Death and the loss of a dear loved one are the hardest things that we will probably ever have to cope with in this life.  But the Bible offers hope!  Pointing to a glorious time just ahead, Isaiah 25:8 (and Revelation 21:3,4) says "God will actually swallow up death forever and Jehovah God will certainly wipe the tears from all faces.  Please also read John 5:28,29.  These wonderful verses have helped many bereaved ones, including myself. I hope you will find the same comfort.  Once again, my deepest and sincerest condolences.
