Ruth was the youngest daughter of eight children born to Anna and Nicholas DeKonty, both of whom emigrated to the United States from Austria-Ukraine. Ruth was married to Robert Christian on March 17, 1957, for 30 years until his death in 1987.
Blessed with good genes, many of Ruth’s older siblings enjoyed healthy lifestyles well into their ninth decade. Her oldest sibling, Michael, celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends. Ruth’s sister, Helen, was a few months short from her centenarian celebration. Siblings, Mary, George, Helen, John and Daniel led active productive lives well beyond their 80th birthdays. Only Paul, the youngest, passed away at an early age due to a motorcycle accident.
When we reflect upon the lives of those eight ancestors, we are struck by their genuine concern and unconditional love they had for one another. Even though these 5 brothers and 3 sisters were separated by geographical distance, they managed to stay connected and involved in each other’s lives. They were truly a family for a lifetime. Aunt Ruth continued to share many happy moments with nieces, nephews and friends about growing up in a household that she characterized as fun, loving and exciting. These same traits were very much in evidence in Aunt Ruth’s conversations frequently punctuated with puns and jokes that further enhance the listening experience.
Ruth was born in Scranton, PA and lived at 1802 Farr Street until moving with her Mother to an apartment next to her oldest brother on West Gibson Street in Scranton, PA In 1950 her youngest brother Paul moved Ruth and their Mom to live in Los Angeles, California until their mom passed away in 1952. Soon thereafter Ruth met Robert Christian who served in the Marshal Islands while a soldier in the US Army.
Ruth’s main occupation was a book-keeper and was knowledgeable of Time Management and she loved to manipulate numbers in her head during her conversations with her nieces and nephews as well as singing her favorite church hymns.
Ruth lived in Las Vegas and attended the First Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for many years where she was loved and highly respected until moving to the Silver Hills Health Care Center. She expressed her appreciation for the staff and special CNAs while she received care at the Silver Hills Health Care Center.
