Dear Bruce, I am just now (over a year later) finding out about your loss and the loss of anyone who had the privilege of knowing Sallie.  As another dear friend who is gone stated, “Sallie is the nicest person anyone could ever know.” Anyone she met, became one of her “dearest friends,” and one could sense her love and kind, giving soul instantly; she always had room in her heart for one more. 
I have missed her cards and funny emails the past year, but was occupied taking care of an ailing husband, so didn’t reach out. I know that her many friends have offered condolences and sweet memories intended to comfort you. Let me offer mine, as well, even though very untimely. Simply, Sallie was truly a unique, one of a kind soul, the best human anyone could strive to be.  Love to you and the family.

Dear Bruce, 

I am so deeply sorry to hear about the sudden and unexpected loss of your beloved, Sallie. Losing someone who has been by your side for 47 years is an unimaginable pain, and my heart goes out to you during this difficult time.

Sallie was such a lovely person - always happy and giving. She brought joy to so many people's lives, and her presence will truly be missed. Her memory will live on through the many lives she touched and the love she shared with you and her vast network friends. Sallie was salt of the earth.

My mother, Milly Whitehead, shared so many happy (and sad) times with Sallie.

Bruce, I am so very sorry for your loss. She is among the stars now and watching over you and all hers and your fur babies. I don't recall the exact year when I met Sallie, but it was in the very early years of attending Sunday School at Temple Beth Shalom in San Leandro. Sallie has always been one of a kind with a smile that could light up the darkest room. I don't believe Sallie ever met a stranger only a new friend she was meeting for the first time! Our Senior year at San Leandro High our class got it so very right when we voted her "Most Friendly." Sallie truly was an Angel here on Earth and my world is so much dimmer because she is no longer here. Rest in peace sweet Sallie.

Sallie, the most kindest, fabulous sense of humour with only good things to say. How I will miss our face time chats from Wales, UK and Turkey. Your novel messages, your voicemails. The laughs. My condolences go to Bruce who has lost his other half, to their fur babies who will miss their Mom. Will never forget you Sallie Shapiro. You were a joy to know ❤️💔❤️

Sallie, we have never met but connected through FB and our love of books. We had many great discussions on books we have both read along with recommendations of books to read. You were kind, thoughtful and a truly wonderful person to know. The world has lost an amazing person. RIP beautiful lady xx Lorraine, Stu & Winnie x

My wife Gerrie and I probably have known Sallie for the least amount of time, but because she was so personable, so happy, so giving, so full of energy, we feel like we have know her forever. The following was written not only for us, but for all of her many friends and family. 


We sit here speechless with tears in our eyes
No words can express the sorrow that lies
In our hearts – just the sadness that came
And knowing our lives will not be the same

You are now in God’s hands and God will assure

Sallie Shapiro 🥀🥀🥀

I can’t even fathom how to process this. Sallie has been a dear friend to me for so many years. She was one of the very few people I went to for advice as I knew she would listen to me intently and show me the path I needed to follow when I would lose my direction and that was often. When I moved to Washington to be near my son, Sallie doubled her efforts to insure we always stayed close. She sent cards and gifts always telling me how much she loved me. She worried about my son’s safety watching him grow from a boy into a man and became a police officer - she truly believed the world needed him to make it a better place. She worried about him even more when he became a hostage negotiator for Spokane Police. And with each life saving award he was given, she celebrated him and was so proud of him. She thoroughly backed the blue as she threw her support to my son and his “blue family”.  When my son and his wife adopted our grandchild, she was so thrilled for them and immediately sent a baby gift. She always wanted me to send pictures of my grandson so she could watch him grow. Sallie was truly the most unselfish person I have known in this life. This earthly world has lost a beautiful soul. I spoke to her last week and she never told me she was having problems. She just wanted to hear about my husband, my son, and my grandson. To have been loved by Sallie was one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. Sallie did possess a feeling for beauty, she had the courage to take risks, she had the discipline to tell the truth and the capacity for sacrifice. I really don’t have it in me to say goodbye. So I’m going to simply say, Until we meet again, my dear friend. 💔💔💔

As so many have said, Sallie had a wonderful spirit. Her smile and warmth were infectious and lit up the room. She exuded love that resonated with others and allowed them to feel welcome in any context. She was such an incredibly sweet woman.

Though she is gone, she is not forgotten. We can each carry the torch of her joy into the world, into the lives of others around us, infecting them with a smile that helps them feel they are welcome and loved, too. That's likely all she'd ever want us to do, and I for one want to honor her in that way.

For those that she leaves behind, Bruce especially, there is a void that needs to be filled. But if we all surround each other, and most especially Bruce, with the love that Sallie enveloped us within, we will grieve together, persevere together, and in time move forward while keeping that spark of Sallie in our hearts. 

Until then, tears and prayers and heartfelt thoughts for all of us still here remembering what an amazing person she was. Thank you Sallie for showing us so much love and strength. We will carry you onward.

Dear Bruce,
I am so saddened to learn of Sally's passing. She was a light that shined so bright for everyone! 
She taught me so much about having compassion for our students at Treem. She introduced me to snakes in the classroom - because kids loved them. She taught me always to watch the popcorn popper in your room, because if you toss the burning bag in the trash it will start a fire and set the fire alarm off! She made us laugh so much!
Her love for students and animals was something that every teacher or person should hope to emulate.  

Bruce, I'm so sorry to hear about Sallie.  I'm in total shock. We go back some 65 plus years and share so many wonderful memories. You were so fortunate to have been a part of her life for 48 years, of which 47 years were married life.  Love never ends with the death of the body for love and the soul are eternal.  They go on.
Sallie will always be with you and she is watching  over you now.  Sallie was a great friend and I loved her dearly. She is still with us but just in another dimension. We will see her again one day.

What a shock.  That picture is so Sallie.   Beautiful,  vibrant,  and outgoing.  
Sallie would always brighten everyone's day.

Heartfelt condolences to Bruce and family. I worked with Sallie at Twin Lakes and always looked forward to hearing her so expressively speak of her many adventures. She often had us in stitches. She was a loving, lovely spirit who will be remembered fondly by those she touched. Loving condolences. 

My dear Bruce, I’m so sorry to hear of Sallie’s passing. Sallie touched so many lives; the students she taught and their parents, and her many, many friends, because to know Sallie was to love her.

 I loved her stories of her misadventures. She always left everyone with a smile. Sallie was Love personified. How I’ll miss her, as I know all who knew her will. My deepest condolences.
