
Stephen S. Braude, Ph.D., passed away fighting cancer, on January 3rd, 2026 at the age of 80. He is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years Gina Ruk, and sister Margie Welling.
Steve was Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at University of Maryland Baltimore County. He was also a talented jazz musician, leaving behind a lot of his own recordings. Once, he was the music director for the comedian Rodney Dangerfield. Despite having Parkinson's Disease for many years, he continued tirelessly to compose and play piano.He was devoted and discriminating audiophile, amassing an immense collection of classical music and jazz recordings. Steve liked photography, and he was an award winning 3D photographer.
His writings dealt with the philosophy of language, philosophy of time, and philosophy of mind. He wrote 11 books. Within the mental health field, Steve is known for his book ''First Person Plural: Multiple Personality Disorder and the Philosophy of Mind''. Steve also gave multiple brilliant, witty and well reasoned presentations attacking illogical claims against therapist who treated survivors of child abuse.
Steve was President of the Parapsychological Association, and former and long time editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Scientific Exploration. He was a perspicacious investigator of unusual experiences such as mental mediumship and psychokinesis. In his book "Immortal Remains", he reviewed the evidence for life after death by carefully examining historical cases and the facts supporting or refuting these claims.
Steve liked to get the details right. His discriminating manner showed up in how he wrote, how he listened to music, and how he made his morning coffee. Steve was a warm, witty, generous, devoted and loyal person. He leaves a large group of colleagues, friends and fans who will remember him with deep affection and love.
