Its been 5 years since we lost our dear Vidya. Hers was a life cut short by cruel illness. Yet, we witnessed her strength, grace, and consideration towards others at all times.  Im sure God has given her her rightful place where she is happy and fulfilled. She remains an inspiration to us all


It's been four years since I lost my beloved wife Vidya. She was far more to me than just a wife: she was the love of my life and my shining star, and my best friend and companion. Without her, I feel this deep void in my life that nothing can ever fill. Vidya will always be in my heart and soul, and I will cherish her memory forever.

It has been exactly 4 years since we lost our dear Vidya. Memories remain. They are less painful, and I know her soul has reached its rightful place, but there’s a deep sadness that we lost such a unique and kind soul prematurely.  I know Vidya watches over us and helps us lead fuller lives. She gave a lot of importance to bonding with family and that is something I now try to do.  We are blessed that she was in our family!  

It has been 2 years since we lost Vidya. Her brave fight remains an inspiration to all who knew her. She put on a brave face and communicated with us via skype once a week--these were highpoints of our lives in 2016-17 !! When she was severely ill or tired, she avoided skype because she didnt want to worry us. She always put others' needs before hers. I doubt we will ever find anyone like her. We are truly privileged that she was born into our family.

I think back to a year ago to the shocking and heartbreaking news of my cousin Vidya's passing. It is hard to put in words the complex mix of emotions and memories that Vidya evokes. 

My first memory of Vidya was from years ago. She was visiting Thatha and Patti in Madras from the US and the entire gaggle of aunts, uncles and cousins had gathered to welcome and talk to Vidya. Sitting around thatha's bed, we all watched and talked and laughed as Vidya slowly unpacked her bags that included a carefully chosen gift for every single family member in Madras, even us little kids!! Vidya's extraordinary love, patience and kindness stood out to me even then.
Today,  I aspire to that because I felt these qualities in her came from a place of deep inner strength. Somedays when I struggle as a parent to set a loving and kind example to my children I think of how she treated me and my other cousins - as a wiser, older and gentle soul who inspired her younger cousin through her example of love and compassion. It always amazed me how effortless it seemed for Vidya to be this way. But, I think it's because there are few people in the world who are as truly selfless as Vidya. I will miss her dearly. And, hope her memory prompts me to act with more kindness, love and generosity towards all others in my life.

I also remember Vidya as a quiet, sweet little girl when you all used to visit Devonshire House. I only saw her as a young girl before 1971, when I got married. I remember Venil and Mathy a little more! Was Vidya fond of drawing and painting? It is really sad that she is no more with us. I did not know about her illness until Mangala mentioned it this time.

My memories of Vidhya is that of a sweet, quiet girl. That was when you all were staying at Devonshire House. I must have been in high school then.  I also remember her telling me about her experience in Washington DC, about the subway system. Also how everyone was consumed by the Watergate affair and watching the TV broadcasts every evening. I used to visit Princeton NJ, on a company project and remember visiting her there. It is so sad she is not with us anymore. Sundari mentioned her illness and it is so tragic.

We are happy that you have decided to bring out a memoir of Vidya. Vidya left Mumbai long years back and if my memory serves me right I did not meet her after that. Our chance to meet her in Las Vegas in 2008 did not fructify for some minor reasons.
So I remember Vidya as the GENTLE and LOVING eldest sister of you three. That is the lasting impression. Sorry that time has taken its toll on other memories.

I first met Vidya when I was an awkward teenager, a little more than four decades ago. Right then, I was struck by this girl, only a few years older, who seemed to have it all figured out. She was so pretty and poised, with the soft aura of a quiet inner peace. She had this small smile that always seemed to play on her face. 
Our families were neighbours at a time when that really meant something. Our parents got very close, and so there were many meals and movies together, many exchanges of special dishes, and daily chats in the corridor. I only got to meet Vidya occasionally, but whenever I did, her sweet demeanour and ready laugh stayed with me  and they always will. 
It is so hard to believe she is no more. This void is something her family and friends will always feel  but the great times together, the memories, will remain to make the difficult moments easier.

Vidya was Effortless  Effortlessly beautiful, effortlessly talented, effortlessly cheerful and effortlessly kind. The laws of physics did not apply to her.
That's how I saw her when I was a child. And that's how I saw her when I was an adult. Vidya was always special. 
The best remembrance of Vidya is to try to be more like her. The world would be a much better place if we all were.

Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards. These words came more meaningful to me when I thought about Vidya's life and fight with ALS. I never met with her but know a lot about her through her sister and my dear friend Gomathy. Vidya was a great mother and mentor, not only to her children, her sisters as well. She inspired us with her courage, kindness and generous of heart. She will be always on our mind and heart. We miss you Vidya.❤

The sari, the quiet excitement and bright eyes for.... a visit to the slums? Vidya was happiest helping others. Her choosing Psychology and Social work was a natural outgrowth of that. Her deep interest in Psychology,exploring articles, books and magazines in this subject led to many discussions. Her understanding was often articulated with empathy and desire to help. 
Information and ideas on topics of mutual interest were often exchanged between us-Adoption, the mentally challenged children, the under-privileged and their education ......My choosing to look after the Department of Special Education was probably a result of those conversations with Vidya and Vishalam chithi!  
Loyal and engaged in people around her Vidya had a ready smile and a sympathetic ear that was unobtrusive. Advice was never thrust on others but her helping hand was confident and firm.  
Vidya was always tastefully dressed and her choice of colour and style was, of course, impeccable- she was an artist in everything she did. 
She left us, too early, with a void that will be deeply felt

I associate three words with Vidya, they are, aesthetic, affectionate and curious. All my recollections of Vidya highlight one or more of these words. We shared a deep interest in art and in psychology. And I would look forward to having conversations with Vidya whenever I could because she always listened intelligently and the conversation would leave me stimulated. Whatever we spoke about, I was always left with the feeling that she was interested in me as a person and not just in the topic being discussed. I am sure she brought this quality into all her interfaces. Another special quality that Vidya brought with her was a sense of great authenticity and of being very trustworthy. I am sure that she would have been a great favourite at her work because of this. I am sure her samsAra cycle is over and her atman is in shAntam.

My first memory of Vidya was at her wedding. I was still fresh to the family so I found the bonds of affection so refreshing, since I come from a highly non demonstrative family! To me the aspect of her that has stayed on from this event through our many interactions was her dignity and graciousness. These are rare traits in today's world.

I have known Vidya since I was a baby, she was at my first birthday (many years ago now). I still remember how she treated me as a child- warm, and very engaging.  Decades later, she interacted with my children the same way, even while battling ALS. Vidya was always a loving, kind person to everyone. She has been dearly missed, but will be forever remembered fondly.

I met Vidya in 1974 when we were both starting school in Washington DC. Even though she was hardly 20 years old, I was impressed with her maturity, wisdom and calmness which was beyond her age. We used to watch Star Trek ( yes, the first generation episodes!) all the time and discussed how great it would be to travel in space and visit all those Planets with Spock! We shared our passion for science fiction, Shakespeare, PBS( upstairs and downstairs episodes !)and music.
If I were asked to describe Vidya in one word, it is  Contentment!. Vidya was always happy about where she was in life, what life had to offer and Never once complained about anything. She carried this all the way till the end and this is a great quality many of us will try and emulate . 
I am sorry my friend Vidya died but I am happy she lived.

Vidya was caring and kind to everyone. She had a wonderful connection with children and showed great strength when faced with adversity. Though it is sad that she is gone, I will always remember her for the life she lived.

As many of my friends and family know, my mother was diagnosed with ALS in early 2015. The doctors gave her 2-5 years to live, but despite the terminal diagnosis she stayed positive and always had a smile on her face. I am very thankful for the support of my friends and family. I was in India when I heard the sad news, and was able to talk to my grandfather and aunts and uncles in person about Amma's passing. 
Amma, I love you very much and I'll miss you. You were kind, gentle and loving.  You cared more about others around you than yourself, and I'll never forget how brave you were.

My mother was and will be one of the best people I will ever know. Her compassion and love for her family, her dedication to her career in social work, and her fierceness in the face of adversity are gifts that I hope to carry on. 
I will never know exactly what it was like for my mother to journey from India to America, but I have such deep admiration for the sacrifices she made to give me a good life. As a child, she instilled in me the practices of fighting for what you believe in and making your voice heard. She was brilliantly outspoken and opinionated. Her leadership and meticulous attention to detail in all respects of her life groomed me to be the woman I am today. 
I am grateful that I could be with her when she took her final breath and know that she is reunited with her Amma and Patti. Hug your mothers if they are with you, and think of them if they are not. Love you always, Amma.

I am so sorry to hear this news. This is such a devastating loss for all of you. I remember your beautiful, smiling sister from years ago. And the cheerful stories you shared about their family and how close you sisters have always been.  This must be also so hard for your father. My deepest condolences to you and the whole family. For our family, Vidhya was an integral part of every family event. Quietly and efficiently she used to take over the hosting function. She was an invisible presence among all the noise. But now, her absence is very visible for every one of us. We all miss her so much.

Vidya brightened the lives of all who knew her. I remember the Devonshire House days. She was a child then- beautiful flashing eyes and a dazzling smile!  It was her  grace; the warm and loving nature and a quiet manner with which she conducted herself throughout her life. She was a beauty in every way. We were fortunate to live in the Phoenix area in the 80's for a few years. She had blossomed in to a wonderful wife and mother, a thoughtful and caring friend and an artist. Her attributes are numerous.
In her last couple of years, the unexpected diagnosis and the experience of a devastating illness, her strength through it all was amazing. Vidya lived every day of her life with dignity and grace. She will always be an inspiration to me. For those of us whose lives have been touched by her it is a blessing and she lives on in our memories.

My family and I have known Vidya and the extended Naranan family for a lifetime. Some of my earliest memories of Vidya are when I was a little girl growing up in Bombay across from the best neighbors anyone could ever have. Vidya was truly special. I remember her kind, gentle and beautiful spirit, matched only by a shining smile and sparkling eyes.  My fondest memories are of Vidya as an artist and painter--I was in awe of her talents  and still remember her oil painting of Nataraja that was hanging in the dining room --I thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen! I also remember how she painted a large and intricate pendulum clock on posterboard in a mere couple of hours, which I used as a costume for a play in which I had to sing about a grandfather's clock. 

Sadly, I wasn't able to meet Vidya in person in the last 25 years, but we managed to stay in touch through occasional phone calls, through news passed on from my parents about Vidya, her children, Ramanan...when we did talk, the connection was so instantaneous and warm that it was impossible to imagine that so many years had gone by. 

Although my written entry is late, please know that I have been thinking of Vidya, Ramanan, Mathy, Venil, Naranan uncle and Vishalam aunty ever since I heard the news of her passing. That someone with such a unique light is no longer with us is immeasurably sad and I grieve with all of you. My image of Vidya will always be that of a beautiful, elegant, loving presence who will be eternally in our hearts.

Remembering Vidya
"Sunshine and flowers and warmest get-well wishes"....these are the words on the card Vidya sent me. It was dated October 28, 2013. These words express her warm and loving spirit. At a later date, Vidya, along with Gomathy, was a guest at my home.  She spoke of her love of art, the beauty of flowers. We stepped outdoors to see my garden. I was surprised to see her move onto the path, going up the slope, then striding along it and coming down the other side. Her energy amazed me.  As Vidya and Gomathy were leaving, Vidya handed me a gift...a beautiful shawl, artfully designed in aqua, purple and rose actually my favorite colors.
The shawl is a thing of beauty. The fabric is silky and gloriously shiny. I learned that the material used is silk and cashmere wool from the Pashmina mountain goat! I treasure the shawl. However, I mainly treasure having briefly had the pleasure of knowing Vidya. She was a beautiful, kind and loving soul.

Dear Ramanan, 
We all grieve with you. All of us who have known Vidya will be grieving with you as long as we have memory.  

Vidya was a cornerstone of my connection with Venky's extended family.  Will never forget the love and affection and warmth shown by her and you when we meet, sadly not often enough. Hugs again, you should know you are not alone in your grief -- even as a peripheral part of the family, I feel her loss.  Amma (Mangala) still breaks down every time she thinks of Vidya -- she wasn't able to talk to us for a few weeks when we lost Vidya, and that intensity of grief still persists.   

The greatest gift the family gave Hari was showing up for his 80th birthday celebration in 2017.  Hugs to you for coming still reeling from your loss. I hope that seeing your family was a source of strength and comfort to you as well, inasmuch as it was a source of pain.

I know I probably should have been one of the first ones to post an entry here, but I found it hard to write about the person I loved the most in the world without breaking down. When I first met Vidya, I thought she was the most beautiful girl in the world, and I still think so.  After I married her, I got to know her other incredible qualities - kindness, compassion, artistic talent, and a good sense of humor that was able to put up with my teasing and playful antics. Vidya was the best thing that came into my life. I wanted to be a better man because of her. She was always supportive and encouraged me in everything I did. She was one of those selfless people who always thought of others first before thinking of herself. Our 38 years of marriage was absolutely wonderful. While I treasure all the great moments we had together, I have been over the past year overwhelmed with grief that such a wonderful person was taken away from us while still so young.  Vidya and I would talk about all the fun things we would do together after retirement, but now alas, she is not there to enjoy it.  Her bravery after being diagnosed with ALS was phenomenal. I try hard to not display the deep sadness in me that will never go away, but it is there.  I am so thankful that such a lovely person came into my life, but her passing away has left this huge void that can never be filled.  Vidya will always be in my heart and soul. My life mission is to now do all the things Vidya would have wanted me to do.

The thing that I found most remarkable about Vidya was her ability to encompass seemingly disparate qualities with perfect poise.
Her kindness and care never failed to shine through the steely determination and resolve.
Her softness was evident while she clearly possessed great strength and was a hard-nosed realist.
Her non-judgemental acceptance of people was balanced by a deep understanding of human nature and behaviour patterns
Her artistic talents were equal to, if not greater than, her logical capabilities
Her patience and calmness did not come in the way of her efficiency 
The way she handled her last years showed the detachment that was beneath the affection she showered so generously on us
She was a great source of support and a person we could all turn to when we needed help. Vidya was a person who could be trusted in any situation. She was always approachable and her empathy made it easy for even a reserved person to open out. Even as a youngster she was mature beyond her years and when we played together as kids, I don't ever remember her trying to bend rules or do any petty cheating that my desire to win often led me into. 
I consider myself very fortunate to have enjoyed her friendship, guidance and support over all these years.

I met Vidya for the first time in Cochin just before her marriage.  As a teenager, I admired her beauty.  Little did I know that over the years  I would get to know her more closely only to find out that her inner beauty was as much her external one . I still fondly remember the time you visited my parents with Ashwin and Amrita. You were one of the few cousins who stayed with us for a few days. 

Kadambari and I were very sad to hear your diagnosis but eagerly read updates sent by Venil and Mathy. It is inspiring to see how well you have taken this without negative feelings and with such grace.

Really sad to hear about your sister's passing. From what I have heard, she seems to have been a person with much strength, courage and beauty of spirit.

Watching her go through her illness must have been so difficult, but the manner in which she dealt with her own deteriorating state is something that is really inspiring.

I first was introduced to my friend Visalam and her children when my first child was born.  We met in the elevator in Boston Mass. and we quickly bonded for the next 2 years.  Our relationship lasted throughout her lifetime.  She told me that she followed Naranan to Boston and had to leave her 3 girls at home with her mother.  Vidya was the eldest and around 12 at this time. She missed the girls and we often talked about them. I was 23 and a new mother, having no experience raising my own child.  Each day we had adventures together and her discussions about Vidya and the girls was welcome. My baby helped to ease her temporary separation.  During the years, I talked to Vidya on the phone sharing familiar interests.  We never met, one must seize the opportunity when it arises.  I am sad to hear of her illness and passing.  My thoughts are with all of you - Naranan, Gomathy and Venil.

For my Sister Vidya,
I was fortunate, in life, to marry Vidya's sister, Gomathy ( a gem herself! ), some 26+ years ago. As years went by, I came to think of her as my sister. She was not my sister by blood, but in the years that followed I, fortunately, had many occasions to spend time with her and those around her, and she somehow made me feel like I WAS a brother. Always kind words and actions. I was impressed and inspired by her nature, same as everyone else that encountered her. Many years ago I was honored when she even did refer to me as her brother. Some simple and common words, but I remember how good it made me feel, and still does. Thanks for that. 
Like many, I think of her often.

Honestly it is difficult to write anything about Vidya since she was such a multi facet, kind, friendly human being.

Vidya was a great friend.

We moved to the neighborhood and were working in our garage when we saw 2 lean and fit desis walking briskly on the sidewalk, this was our first encounter with Vidya and Ramanan, next time around we waved at each other and a 3rd time they stopped to chat and we introduced. Over the next few months we invited each other at our houses and our friendship grew stronger. Our children developed a special fondness for Vidya and so did she. She would bring books and read those to them.

We met Ashwin and Amrita when they were in town.We also got to know Vidya's extended family such as mom, Ramanen's mom and sister and Vidya's sisters when they visited as she made sure we met them and sat down for dinner either at her place or ours.

Vidya and Ramanen were akin to the extended family that our children did not have in Vegas. She would always make sure to bring some gifts to the kids whenever she went for a trip, a steady supply of books notwithstanding.

We are very sorry to see Vidya go, she will be sorely missed but I am sure Ramanan Ashwin and Amrita will carry her legacy forward.

Dear Amrita, Ramanan and Ashwin, Mathy, Venil and Nannu chithappa,

It has been really hard for me to find words to write. We were hoping to visit LV again this summer to see Vidya once again before we leave for sabbatical in fall. I just did not think her end was so near and I still feel it is surreal and am in a state of disbelief. 

I cannot imagine the pain you must all feel. 

I wish I had taken photographs when we visited, but I realize we didn't. That said, our last visit will always be a bright memory in our minds. I remember Vidya telling me not to be shocked when I saw her - and the thing is, she was just so beautiful, even despite all her body was going through. Her spirit radiated through it all, with such courage and strength. 

I recall Vidya's genuine love for Karuna and her interest in everything she was doing and every detail of our visit to the national parks. Did you go on the emerald pools hike, she wrote - and it was that level of detail, always, with which she followed the lives of all her cousins. She kept up with all of us on the phone, leaving warm messages when she did not reach us - and I will feel that warmth every time I think of her. 

I remember once, when I was a kid in Bombay, copying some of the pictures she had drawn, which were framed in Kolaba. She had nothing but encouraging words  - making me feel like I could be just as artistic as she was one day. It wasn't the kind of false praise one sometimes metes out to kids, it was an entirely sincere appreciation. She truly believed in each of us, seeing the best in us, and was, I think, always absolutely sure of our success. 

Rainer remembers her reading out a passage at our wedding.  I also remember the excitement of the news about Vidya's wedding. It is the first cousin's wedding I can remember. I remember drawing a picture of Vidya standing on a step-stool to put a garland around Ramanan's neck, because I had in my childish mind decided that Ramanan was so tall she would have to climb a step stool to garland him. I also remember thotakar had spent his hard-earned money to buy two lamps for her as a gift - which touched me so deeply as a gesture from someone who had so very little to give. Mathy and Venil sang at the wedding - and I remember Nannu chithappa breaking down when they sang, "Is this the little girl I carried?" I was sad, too, to hear she was going so far away. 

Then we visited New Jersey and the love between Vidya and Ramanan was so evident to me, even as a kid - because it was such a strong bond. A bond that I know will remain always as a source of strength for all three of you. You two were such an ideal couple, with such abiding affection and respect for one another. That can never end. In Western ceremonies, they say, "until death do us part," but I know, dearest Ramanan, that wherever Vidya is now, she is not and never will be parted from you.

Even from this distance, we can feel your loss. I realize that after 38 years of marriage, one develops a shared identity and the loss of one's life partner is almost a loss of a part of oneself.

Words are not adequate to describe Vidya. She was a true gem. Vidya was beauty, grace and goodness personified. She was tremendously compassionate and affectionate towards everyone around her. Vidya was a very talented and artistic person. I am fortunate to have been in her orbit and cherish every moment that I spent with her. Her spirit will continue to live on and illuminate our minds. I am extremely saddened by the news I learnt about your sister Vidya. Please accept my sincere heartfelt condolences.
 I do not have the words, the right words or appropriate ones that could bring you comfort during this terrible time. Despite the years gone by, I am unable to forget our days at Bhaskara before all of us left and took our separate ways. If I remember right, there was a reception held to celebrate Vidya's wedding.
 During these difficult times, my mind is immediately cast in your father's direction. In some ways, I find some solace in the fact that your father has Venil's support in Chennai.
 Once again, let me extend my deepest and most sincere condolences under these difficult circumstances.

I met Vidya through a very unfortunate circumstance & we continued to corrrespond. Quite simply, Vidya was an absolutely beautiful human being - both inside and out! She exemplified what it means to be a social worker and handled her position with much compassion and grace. She was an example of a truly good human being. I am so sorry for her family's loss. God be with her family....as Vidya is now with God...

Vidya Ramanan is the best social worker ever!! I worked with Vidya for 12 years and I have seen her consistent dedication, devotion, service, and compassion to patients, families, and fellow social workers. She is always on top of her work. She makes nurses lives easier especially when working with complicated cases. She loves her work and is very passionate about doing her job well. She brings around good energy and positive attitude around her. She is the BEST and we will miss her !

Namaste!!! I am extremely sorry and shocked to learn the sad demise of your eldest daughter Smt. Vidya at a young age. I hope, both her son and daughter are grown up and there are no dependents.
 
It is a great shock to you at this age and can be extremely unbearable. I convey my heartfelt condolences to you, to Mrs Venil and Mr Sumantran and all other members.
 
My eldest daughter Bharti died almost at the same age in May. Her name is similar to that of late Smt. Vidya. Of course she is older by 2 years.
 
At this time of grief, you require some elderly people like me to share your grief and feelings. You must console yourself and be brave and guide the youngsters.

Still in shock to hear about Vidya, Gomathy and Venil.  It seems like yesterday we spent a weekend in Las Vegas with Vidya, Ramanan and the kids, Gomathy.  My thoughts and prayers are with you all and Amritha and Ashwin.  A beautiful and sensitive soul - Vidya.

So sorry to hear about Vidya's passing.  It must have been so hard to see her go through the debilitating disease.  Our heartfelt condolences to you, Mathy and your father. I was deeply sad and shocked to learn that Vidya passed away on the 29th of May. Though I had not met Vidya for fifty years now, I distinctly recall the very happy days we all had at WoodVllle in Ooty in the 1950's and 1960's. 

Seeing the Video you sent, I feel Vidya had a very happy and meaningful life in the USA, and rose to the position of Director of Social Services in the University. It is  unfortunate  that after such a glorious life, she had to succumb to consequences of ALS.  That is the sad aspect of life.

Vidya was a good friend and a lovely person. We were in and out of touch after school, and I am so glad I could meet her when she was here in Mumbai with her daughter some years back. Soon after that she told me about her diagnosis, and it was very sad and upsetting news.

We continued exchanging the occasional mails, but after a while she didn't respond,and I thought maybe she couldn't write anymore. She had already told me her speech was affected, and that she would have to quit work. Through all of this she was very positive, and I was hoping against hope she would recover, but it was not to be.

I do believe whatever happens is part of a larger plan we don't always understand. She is at peace now. May all of you find the strength to cope with the loss.

A September day 25 years ago, I was a social worker at UMC.  That morning I would meet my new desk mate.  The office was small and the job stressful; it was important to have a compatible co-worker.  I had a good feeling about the woman introduced to me as Vidya Ramanan. She was petite, unassuming, and her eyes spoke volumes.  As the days went by, I learned that "Miss Vidya" was a moral person with impeccable values.  She was kind, intelligent, interesting, hard working, and someone I could trust with my most personal sharings.Family was the most important thing in life to Vidya; both nuclear and extended.  As the years went by, I felt like I knew them all as she spoke of them frequently with intense love, and in such detail.  She loved her mother-in-law, Rugminy, very deeply.  She came to Las Vegas to be with she and Gopal's children when Vidya went to work full time.  It was truly a sad time for her when the children were older and she moved back to the east coast.  When empty nest time was drawing closer, I talked to her about getting hobbies or some other focus to make this transition easier.  Her answer to empty nest was to do what she loved second in life, work as a social worker.  She worked a few weekend days a month at Mountain View Hospital and was very satisfied.

Vidya was the least materialistic person I have ever known.And I can honestly say, I never heard her say a malicious word about anyone in all of the years I have known her.

My health issues forced me to retire from UMC after 8 years of daily interaction with my closest friend. She called my home twice a week, without fail, for years.  If I was unable to go to the phone she would talk with my husband and check on me.  Through him, she updated me about herself and her family.  I feel such pain with her passing.  I can only imagine how her family is feeling.  My deepest sympathy goes out to the wonderful family she loved and adored so much.

We are so sad and sorry to hear that Vidya has left us all so prematurely. I cannot imagine how you all and Prof. Naranan is feeling. It is so hard for a parent to lose a child. Our prayers for the departed soul and condolences to you all. She was such a wonderful person, a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and it was a pleasure to talk to her.

My deepest condolences for your loss.   You are in my thoughts and prayers.  I pray to God to give you strength to go through this difficult time.

I was so very shocked and sad to hear of Vidya's untimely passing. I was so pained to hear from Mathy that she had been battling ALS with courage and grace for two and a half years. The Naranan family, whom the Ramaswamis have now known for almost four decades, was such an important part of what made the years in TIFR so wonderful. There I remember Vidya as the beautiful and graceful oldest sister, who got married and went off to the US when Mathy and I were still giggling schoolgirls. She always seemed so calm and kind, ever willing to take care of others. It is so heartbreaking to know that ALS claimed her much too young.

Mathy, Venil, Naranan uncle, and the Ramanans are in my thoughts and prayers. I wish you all great strength in bearing this unbearable loss and pray that the passing of time and the warmth of all the wonderful memories will eventually soften the sharp edges of the pain.

           My wife Rama and I are extremely saddened to learn about the untimely demise of your elder sister Vidya on May 29 due to an incurable neural disorder.      For about a year, we and your father Prof Naranan were neighbors in Bhaskara, TIFR Housing Complex and at that time we came to know you all rather well. Our memory of Vidya is that of a gentle and soft spoken young college girl whom we met occasionally. After some time she got married in US and we used to learn from Prof  Naranan that she was happily settled with her family there. It comes out clearly from tributes to her that she was widely loved and respected by the community around her due to her caring and affectionate personality.

I'm so sorry to hear about Vidya. I can only recall her smile and our days together in Mumbai growing up. I can understand how devastating this is for all of you. I'm thinking of all of you and praying right now.Please let me know if I can be of any solace or help.

Vidya will always be remembered in my heart for being calm and steadfast in every situation. I started working with Vidya in 2000 and we shared a Social Work office. I would never have made it through my probationary period if she had not been so supportive. She always helped me see the right way of doing things no matter how difficult the situation may have been. Vidya had a gentle way of seeing things and when she explained things it all would come together. She would make the most difficult become the simplest and she always was positive no matter what she would endure. 

I pray God's blessings upon her and hope she is finally at peace.

I worked as a Social Worker at UMC between 2009-2013. I had the pleasure of getting to know Vidya as a person, co-worker, and boss. She was the most pleasant, understanding and lovely individual that I have ever had the pleasure of working with! I never saw her get angry or say anything unpleasant to anyone. She was always smiling and made everyone who met her feel special. She was simply full of grace and class!!

This question has been asked for several thousand years and yet there is no answer to it. The definition of good person is Vidya and it is very sad that she suffered for the last few years and is now no more with us.

I was so sorry to hear about Vidya passing away. She was such an affectionate and caring person. I remember when my grandfather passed away, we received a beautiful card from Vidya and Ramanan with Vidya's lovely handwriting. My grandfather and Vidya were both talented artists. She was a source of inspiration to everyone who knew her, young or old. So was Ramanan. 
Vidya,'s  calm acceptance of ALS was shown in the way she wrote about her steady deterioration in the most impersonal manner.  She fought it hard with exemplary courage but continued to be the gentle, loving person she always was. 
Ramanan looked after her with great love and affection, taking her to beautiful places. It must have been extremely difficult to maintain a calm demeanor but he did it to the end.

I am very sorry to learn that Vidya passed away on Monday 29th. She seemed to be getting better, but this seems to be a sudden turn of deterioration It is very difficult to be consoled when you lose those near and dear to you (Visalam, Vidya). 

Vidya, as I remember was one of sweet nature and talent. I can understand and feel the sorrow you are experiencing at this time. It has probably been a few years since you had a visit from Vidya. That does make it very difficult to reconcile to what has transpired now.

You are surrounded by Venil and others to give you support to the loss of Vidya. This is a time when you need to talk out your grief and get solace.

Dear Naranan and Ramanan, 
We were shocked to hear about Vidya's untimely death and want to convey our deepest condolences.  Sometime back through Rugmini mami we learnt that Vidya was suspected to have ALS , and that she was being treated with a new medicine to alleviate the conditions and had promise. We also learnt that Vidhya was adjusting well to change of residence, more suited to her, by not having to climb stairs  and being able to do personal hygiene and walking with a walker etc.  Our general impression was that the medicine was helping her cope with the disease.  But this sudden bad news was shocking to us. We do not know what to say or how to say it to console you. Vidhya was always admired by us for her commitment to social work and her gentle manners and ways to deal with everyone and will always be in our memory. Pl. accept our deepest condolences.

How can such a thing happen to nice, friendly and ebullient Vidya when we have known like member of our family? Her hospitality at Las Vegas is still fresh in our mind. We had such a nice time with her when she visited us in Vashi.
Our heartfelt condolences to you, Venil, Mathy, Ramanan, Ashwin, Amrita and pray for strength to bear the loss. In a way it is fortunate that Visalam is not there to hear this, she would have been shattered.

Hello Venil, Nannu Perriappa et al.,

Amrita already wrote a wonderful summary of Vidya's funeral.  I will just reiterate that the service was truly beautiful -- so many gorgeous flowers, Vidya looking serene and lovely, the wonderful slide show showing pictures of Vidya and family (including pictures of her as a young child all the way up to a few months ago), and so many well wishers of Vidya, Ramanan and the family in attendance. I had the chance to speak with two of Vidya's close friends from work, Minnie and Linda, and they both expressed how much Vidya meant to them, what a gem she was, and how well regarded she was by all of her colleagues. 

I also read in an earlier email about how the security guard at UMC attended the funeral to pay his final respects to Vidya.  I think that speaks volumes to the type of person that Vidya was, that all those she touched and interacted with, even if only for a brief period, were enveloped in her kindness.  

I know that it must have have required an immense amount of work and coordination to organize Vidya's service within a matter of a few days.  Hats off to Amrita and others for arranging a flawless, beautiful ceremony that Vidya would have loved.  

Appa and I were so glad to be there to honor Vidya and support Amrita, Ashwin, Ramanan, Mathy and others during this difficult time.

Dear Nannu Athimbere & Venil

It was with great reluctance and anguish I decided to undertake the trip to LV . 
The trips before were made with the joyous anticipation of meeting Vidhya  Ramanan 
and kids. 

Since we had booked our tickets at a short notice we didn't realize that we were not even assigned 
seats ( though charged double) when we reached the airport we were told that that it was overbooked we could not travel on the flight. I was devastated as I felt Vidhya would have liked me to be there believe it or not a miracle did happen I just moved a little in the front to hear the gate agent better and both chithu and I got pushed into the aircraft !!!

We were able to spend time with Ramanan Rugminy Miami Ashwin Amrita Mathy Jon & Revathy's family. It was Amrita Ramanan & Mathy helping me and I had thought I would be giving them comfort. Amrita told me that she was celebrating Vidhya's life , the grief was there but it was a wonderful life .

Saturday morning we entered the hall filled with beautiful flowers and amidst them all was the most beautiful flower Vidhya . A lovely song Unforgettable rendered by Nitara was very moving. Anish told us of how she would engage with the children playing was different from engaging them I realized how true it was . Kalyan used to send her messages and she used to keep in touch with him till the end . The children were upset on hearing the news and when Chithu told him that she was no more with us K told she is always with us. Kudos to Amrita Ramanan & Ashwin for arranging a ceremony so full of grace and love. 

The hall was filled to capacity , she had helped so many in her short span of  life . Thaila and sugandha sang beautifully . Amrita Ashwin spoke about their wonderful mother and her zest for life even after being giving the sentence of ALS she enjoyed every moment of her life travelled  to Alaska and New Mexico visited a lot of places on her way to Barrows for treatment . Ramanan was her devoted companion always with her I remember when I visited them last in May he would go out for a walk but keep coming back every 15 minutes to find out how Vidhya was doing .  

Jaya a very close friend  told us about how they used to enjoy discussing books movies etc. Chithu read a beautiful  poem by Gibran and shared some anecdotes. I felt very peaceful after attending the ceremony Vidhya was able to help me come to terms with our grief too.

Thank you Ramanan Amrita & Ashwin for all that you had done . Words cannot express what I felt seeing it all.

It is very hard for me to put into words to express the helpless feeling I have thinking about our amazing Vidya. I am extremely sorry for your loss and cannot even imagine what must be going on in your mind. When I called you the other day, I was very scared about what to say. 
But talking to you was cathartic. In fact you solaced us by talking about Vidya. 

She was a bright star and impacted the lives of everyone she met by her intrinsic nature. They used to say about our amma, "she liked everyone she met."  Vidya was like that. 

She was an incredible person of great talent, yet humble and unending affection for everyone. Everyone in your family, including you and manni, sought her wisdom. She was wise and could see bigger pictures and expressed them clearly. For Mathy and Venil she was a second mother. The sisters are so close, it is a joy to see them interact. She had excellent communication skills. How beautifully she wrote! At work she was respected, adored, admired and recognized for excellence. 

This doesn't even cover fraction of her talents. She excelled in everything she touched. Even till the end she kept herself busy with her painting and spreading joy to us all.  I keep wondering how far she would have gone if ALS didn't attack her. Very sad. 

Vidya's fortitude in battling her illness was amazing. ALS is a terrible disease, she knew all about it, and she fought so bravely. It would have been easier to give up, but she didn't. With her positive attitude and optimism she tried her best till the end. It is the cruel disease that beat her. So sad that she suffered so much. But if you looked at her (as we did last year, you couldn't tell.) That's how brave she was.  She has taught us all how to face adversity in health. 

Memories of her running around the Berhampur house when she was barely two years old keep dancing in my mind. I will remember her what and how she was. (Even in her writings when she was sick, she made no mistakes in grammar or spelling! I seem to do them all the time.) 

Vidya was an unique, one-of-a-kind person and as I wrote to Ramanan, we are thankful and grateful that we were in her orbit.  

As you said in one word Nannu, she was a GEM, sparkling in all directions.

 Vidya is the first niece I had ever had and my earliest memories of her are still fresh after all these years. I remember how she delighted me when she was just three years old - when I listened to her telling me a story in Bombay in 1957-  in her own precocious and excited style. She must have learnt this story telling art from her father, I thought. And when I came home from Bombay, the first thing my mother asked me was , Did you hear Vidya tell a story? I said, Yes, I did, and it was great!
I also remember how Vidya interacted with others and her sisters. I have a photo of Vidya and Venil taken by Nannu - apparently when they did not realize they were being photographed. It is a simple photo - Vidya casting a glance at her younger sister. In that look there was a glow, warmth and affection - that look stayed with me forever -  such a bond between the two sibs. It is the same thing with Mathy. Mathy considered Vidya like a second mother. All the three siblings were mutually affectionate and supportive of one another. They shared many common interests like music, art, and  literature Vidya was the eldest, so she naturally commanded a lot of love and respect from the other two. Whenever I think of Nannu/Manni family, I think of their three daughters. Because Vidya was the first, I think, she held a special fascination for me.
And when it came time for Vidya to marry, she was extremely fortunate to find in Ramanan a devoted husband and friend, and in Ramanan's family, including his sister Revathi, and mother Rukmini Mami, a loving and generous second family.  I first met Ramanan in 1977, and when I broached to him the idea of marrying Vidya, his eyes brightened.  He said he had heard of Vidya through his relatives, and had high regard for her.  Well, we, including Vidya's father and my elder brother, Naranan, had a very high regard for Ramanan too. Vidya and Ramanan married two years later, and Vidya moved to the US to start her life as a married woman, and soon a mother. 
Amrita and Ashwin are Vidya's greatest legacy, and they, sitting here today, should always remember that their mother loved them dearly -- with all her heart and mind.   And she was very proud of them -- of their curiosity, of their passion, of their perseverance. 
When I heard two years ago that Vidya had been diagnosed with ALS, I could not believe it.  I, like many of you, did not want to believe it.  But I also know that she did not let her health problems depress her spirit and zest for life.  She continued to do pencil sketches, and more recently, completed some beautiful computer aided paintings.   And she received the constant care and support of her husband, her children, her in-laws, and dear friendsuntil her last breath this past Monday morning.  
I standing here now, think about Nannu, Vidya's father, and Venil, Vidya's dear sister who are in Chennai.  What must they be feeling?  How are they coping?  On their behalf, I just want to say, We will miss you, Vidya.  May you be at peace.

We all deeply mourn Vidya's loss.I am truly fortunate to have been her cousin and I will cherish every moment that I got to spend with her.

I was so sorry to hear about Vidya passing away. She was such an affectionate and caring person. I remember when my grandfather passed away, we received a beautiful card from Vidya and Ramanan with Vidya's lovely handwriting. My grandfather and Vidya were both talented artists. We will miss them both dearly.

We are all still shocked and absorbing the news of Vidya's passing. She was an amazing person and was doing amazing things all the way till the end and showed such a positive attitude in fighting her illness. I am glad we were able to see her when she visited last September and that Amma was able to visit and help a few months ago. I'll be attending the funeral services on Saturday. Take care and we're so sorry that she was taken away way too soon.

We received the news earlier this evening about Vidya's passing, and we are all in a state of complete shock and sadness.  I remember just recently Vidya was sharing with all of us some beautiful computer generated art..and it was great to hear she was keeping herself busy and doing things she genuinely loved like her art.   I had not personally seen her for several years but was getting frequent updates from my father and Selvi Athai about she was doing and coping..

Our deepest condolences and prayers are with all of you and of course with Ramanan, Amrita, Ashwin and the larger extended families on both sides.  We will miss Vidya a lot  and she will always be in our memories and hearts

Amma and Appa are on their way to Las Vegas, and I was going to try to sleep, knowing Uma will wake up early. But I couldn't. I wanted to write you first. I've been wanting to, but wasn't sure what to say. You have each been on my mind so much. I wrote to Amrita soon after I heard the very sad news. Somehow, I felt I could write her. I guess I'd been thinking about Uma, and was imagining how Vidya might have felt when she found out she was sick, thinking about her daughter. And I wrote to Amrita with all that in my mind.

I didn't know how to write to you three, though. I still don't. But I wanted you to know I feel for you so much. Vidya was a bright light for so many. For family, friends, and so many people we don't even know what a gift she was. I really can't imagine what you all must be going through. I'm sure she must have worried so much about worrying her loved ones. I'm also sure she must have felt the love pouring out from all of us, in her direction. I hope you all can feel that love too, pointed in your direction. I hope it can give you some strength in this unimaginable time.

Vidya is with all of us, in our hearts. She will be there all our lives. I'm so glad Amma, Appa, Ramya and I were able to see her in December, and on her birthday. We felt blessed to be able to spend such a special day with her. And I am so happy Uma was able to meet Vidya, one of the most wonderful people she will ever meet.

I am heartbroken and shattered that my beautiful, talented, gentle, courageous and kind cousin Vidya is no more. I can only imagine the pain and sorrow you must be going through. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I pray to god you find the strength to go through this very difficult time.

Vidya has been a very important part of my life. Her beautiful painting of sunflowers had a very prominent place in our living room in Srinagar colony. Everytime I had friends over I would proudly show them my cousin's art work. She was in a way my amma's  little sister and my Appa adored her.

My first memory of Vidya was her helping me in a biology project. I had a biology project to describe the germination of a bean. As usual I procrastinated my work and I must have been very stressed during one of the ARS get togethers and she helped me. I got the highest grade (not very deserved as Vidya did the work).

My many trips to Colaba were always a delight. I hero worshipped my older cousins and they were always so kind, gentle and welcoming to us. I must have been an annoying younger sister but they never let me feel this.

When I was 10 we visited Vidya and Ramanan in New Jersey. We had a lovely time with them. They were just married and starting out their life together. I could see that Ramanan adored and worshipped his lovely wife.

Every trip Vidya made to India she was always thoughtful to bring each and every one of us a gift. A pretty blouse, some makeup, a book I loved this that she never forgot anybody and we all felt so special to her.

In 2013 Vidya visited us in Holland together with Amrita. Although her trip was very short we managed to do a lot. I felt especially bad that I could not take her to the Rijksmuseum (as this was closed for renovation). She loved Rembrant and I always thought I could take her there oneday. Amrita did spend more time on her return journey and we loved having her with us. Through Amrita I could see what an amazing mother Vidya was.  Amrita is so beautiful, talented and courageous, I could see that she was very much her mother's daughter.

My dear beautiful, talented, amazingly courageous and strong cousin I will miss you terribly. You are my Hero. May you rest in peace, united with your amma and patti.

 I  do not have words to express my grief.  This morning when I am filling the feeders and ponds, remembering how much Vidya enjoyed   her visit in September this time with Ramanan. Mathy and Jon joined us also and we had great time. It was very short trip  but it will take some time not to think these days when I go to my deck where she used to sit  and in the garden watching the birds.
        Also Ramanan and Vidya allowed me to have me for 10 days during their move from FEb 23 rd to March 4th. I felt Vidya was doing and managing every thing with her I phone, I pad and the writing pad. She was walking with walker. It is only 3 months and  she is no more with us.
        I tried to spend time with her  sitting next to her. She used to write two things several times.
1. I feel very sad for Appa, he is very brave.
 2.  I am very close to Amma because of my Pshycolgy experience and she used to talk to me a lot about it.
        Also saw how much Ramanan gave her care and attention. The move was not easy because they moved earlier than originally planned. But Vidya and Ramanan with texting managed the move successfully.
        Mathy's e mails and texting also every day Vidya will show me. She did all the things regularly suggested by doctors, Mathy, you etc.  When I was there your poem Yellow Submarine ,we listened together.
        Vidya was very proud of Amrtia's recent interview and she will play to her friend when they came. Also the Debby Reynolds Video we watched  3 times I think every time she will smile when we see her name twice in the credits. Vidya was stunning in that Video talking.
        Vidya cared for Ramanan so much and told me to make his favorite dishes  so he can have it for dinner  as e can freeze it. 
after I leave. She wrote Rugmini mami recipe for me, showed me how to make Asparagus vegetable.  Ramanan appreciate how Mathy also made the dishes for him.
        So Ashwin came for Mother's day but it is sad when he was visiting you this shocking   thing happened.
       Vidya will be remembered as an exceptional,  very sweet caring niece .
        Vidya's  smile will be there with me for ever.

Every word that every one has said or written about Vidya is true, and yet I find words are inadequate to express what's in my heart.
In the early days after I got married and moved to Bombay, Vidya was my first friend and although she younger than me, a mere 17 to my 19, she was my confidante, too. That was her way--she enveloped me in warmth and I was able to bear the separation from my own home. 
Those interminable talks with her, about topics ranging from movies to marriage, were my solace and comfort in those early days and the miles that destiny put between us in later years could not break that bond. 
The memories come flooding all at once and it is difficult to write.
Perhaps the best tribute we can pay to Vidya is to live and love as she did to make a difference in people's lives.
Lots of love to all and especially Nannu athimber, Ashwin, Amrita, Venil and Mathy.

Vidya was a gem indeed. She was a very special sister, and we all looked up to her. She touched everyone's life in a special way. 

She was an amazing artist and her finger art that she created, effortlessly it seemed, was so vivid and beautiful.

I have so many memories of our childhood; Ramanan and her wedding was a memorable event that we all enjoyed thoroughly, Venil and Mathy singing Bare Necessities, Sunrise Sunset; her visits to India with Ashwin and Amrita as children, again fun filled. And she always brought gifts for every single member of the family. No small achievement, given how many of us there are! She had a special bond with ARS thatha that he cherished. She studied Homeopathy and we all turned to her for advice on the best remedies. 

When I came to the US as a student Vidya always called to check in, to make sure I was doing well. She made time to visit and stay with us and get to know our children, understand their interests and interact with them in her endearing way. And even when we visited her, Ramanan and mami in April, she delighted in seeing letters from the family, pictures and videos of the children, and in sharing with us Amrita's TV interview and the Debbie Reynolds piece on Rehab in which a vibrant Vidya was featured. 

That's how I will remember her. We are all fortunate to have had her in our lives.

I met Aunty during Rinki and Arjun's wedding and I immediately sensed something very special about her spirit. Her kindness, warmth, smile and affection was easy to see. I am truly lucky and blessed to have good conversations about history and religion and travel with Aunty. It was so wonderful to find a kindred spirit who was interested in these topics.  She will be missed by all. But her spirit will live on through all of us who will always remember her.

We were hoping and praying for a miracle but it was not to be so.  Like her maternal grandfather she showed us how to face disaster with courage and grace.
