

Walter Barnwell, 81, a long-time resident of southern California and most recently of Las Vegas, passed away on September 6, 2014 at the Nathan Adelson Hospice. He was born on October 26, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois. Walter was proud to have served 12 years in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant serving from 1950 to 1962. His assignments included Greenland, Alaska, Japan, Pakistan, and many states. He enjoyed the military and had many stories to tell. Walter worked at the Corp offices of IHOP for over 30 years until he retired in 2003. Walter enjoyed watching action movies, playing poker with family members, barbecuing and eating Popsicles. He was famous for his homemade hot chili and macaroni and cheese. He was a man that had to keep busy. He was up early in the morning and out of the house. He was either working, doing errands, or visiting friends. He would be back by the afternoon and relax somewhat. Walter was known by his children as Pops, Pop go the Weasel, Papasan, Dad and Daddio. He was loved and will be missed by all who had known him. He is survived by his wife Kim Barnwell; ex-wife Loretta Barnwell; daughters Fran Briscoe, Michele Avery, Suzanne Hughes; sons Vernon Barnwell and William Barnwell; sister and brother-in-law Grace and Claude Cothran; brother Charles Barnwell; sister and brother-in-law Kathy and Donald Almeida; sister-in-law Karen Osborne; mothers-in-law Barbara Powers and Dianne Osborne; eight grandchildren Brianna and Jasmine Barnwell; Troy and Amanda Avery; Joshua, Ryan, Jackie, Dominic Barnwell; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A visitation will be held from 3:00 – 7:00pm on September 15, 2014; a funeral service will be held at 11:00am on September 16, 2014 followed by burial at 12:00pm. All services will be held at Palm Eastern Mortuary and Cemetery.
