Mom, I yearn for your presence and long to embrace you. Although I'm managing decently without you. the ache of missing you is overwhelming. Mom. We love you and miss you so much.

Dear Mom,

We are trying to stay strong, but it is far easier said than done when daily mundane routines lead us back to you.  You are so intricately intertwined with our lives and the deep void that linger in your absence is a source of great, deep sorrow followed by sharp, painful pangs of regret. 

During our final visit with the doctor,  you had to lie on a recliner in the office due to excruciating pain from the cancer that has now settled in your bones.  I cringe helping you off the wheelchair into the recliner that shoot great pain up your side.  After moments of jostling, I get you situated on the recliner.  I turn to rinse some sweat, and a bit of tear at a nearby sink as I hope to be strong for the both of us.  Returning from the sink, I am met with your concerned gaze.  Your advancing disease and pain are irrelevant and pales in comparison to your concern for my comfort.   Moments like this and countless others which are second nature to you makes up the epitome of who you are.  

We had your memorial service the other day.  I know you shy away when you are the center of attention, but it was the only way for people that love you to say their goodbyes.  Multitude of people whom we could not invite as we have lost contact with somehow knew of your passing and came to pay their respects.  Seeing the deep grief in their eyes, I am once again struck with astonishment and humbled by how profoundly you have touched their lives. 

 Sons and daughters often rationalize that we are doing the best we can for our parents under the circumstances.  We were no different.  We took everything you did for granted.  So many precious moments wasted.   But this is no surprise for you.  You knew this all along and yet still loved us furiously with all your heart.  I only wish our hearts can be big enough to hold all your love.

I can still see you sitting on the sofa gazing out the window…

I miss you so much.

사랑하는 송연이 집사님을 추모하며...
 
“송연이 집사님은 나의 로마서16장 13절입니다.”
 
지난 수요일 오전에 미국에 살고 있는 처남 정 집사에게서 전화가 왔습니다.
인사를 나누고는 잠시 머뭇거리다가 “매형! 송연이 집사님이 오늘 돌아가셨어요...”합니다. 느닷없는 부고에 머리가 띵하고 가슴이 철렁합니다.
얼마 전까지도 메일로 안부를 나누고 내 설교를 들을 수 있는 방법을 알려 달라고 하셔서 우리교회의 영상설교링크를 보내드렸었는데... 갑자기 돌아가셨다는 말에 어찌해야 할 바를 모르겠고 가슴이 메어옵니다.
 
사랑하는 사람의 죽음이 믿기지도 않고 상황을 모르겠어서 아내에게 “송집사님의 딸인 세라집사에게 전화를 걸어보자”고 했지요. 아내도 놀란 마음을 추스르면서 전화를 걸어봤습니다. 아픈 마음을 누르며 차분하게 전화를 받습니다. 어머니께서 신장암 진단을 받고 치료를 받으시다가 불과 두주 만에 천국에 가셨다는 이야기를 합니다. 나는 옆에서 듣고 있다가 뭐라 할 말이 없어서......
“세라 씨 ~ ”하고 이름을 불렀습니다. 내 목소리를 듣자마자 “목사님~”하고는 참았던 울음이 터져 버립니다. 나도 흐르는 눈물을 주체할 수가 없습니다.
 
아무 말도 하지 못하고 한참을 울다가 어설픈 위로를 하고 전화를 끊었습니다. 하루 종일 가슴이 먹먹합니다. 송연이 집사님은 저의 미국사역에 최고의 동역 자였습니다. 오랜 시간을 함께하면서 단 한 번도 마음이 상하거나 아쉬웠던 일이 없던 귀한 복음의 동지였지요. 낯설고 부족한 이민 사역이었지만 전혀 관여나 요구는 없고 지지와 사랑만 있던 어머니 같은 동역 자였습니다.
 
라스베이거스의 몇 개의 호텔에서 향수코너를 운영하면서 사업을 했었는데 지금 생각하니 송 집사님이 팔았던 어떤 향수보다도 향기로운 삶을 살았던 아름다운 분이었습니다. 내가 한국으로 사역지를 옮긴 뒤에도 미국을 방문하면 집사님이 운영하던 “웰빙 인더박스”라는 스시 집에 초대해서 최고의 식사를 대접하시곤 했습니다. 정말 맛있었습니다. 맛나게 먹고 있는 가족들을 흐뭇한 미소로 바라보시며 계속해서 식탁을 채워주시던 어머니의 손길이 그립습니다.
 
라스베가스 성시화운동본부를 창립하고 성시화사역을 할 때는 당신의 사업장을 위해서 기도하고 축복해 주시는 사목이라는 명분으로 매달 넉넉한 사역비를 지원해 주셨습니다. 그 보다 더 귀하고 힘이 난 것은 항상 웃어주시고 지지해주고 칭찬해 주시는 따듯한 마음입니다. 이런 분이 동역 자이었음이 내 인생과 사역의 최고의 축복이었습니다.
 
바울이 로마서16장에 자신의 동역 자들의 이름을 꼼꼼하게 기록한마음을 이제야 알겠습니다. 저는 오늘...저의 로마서16장에 분명하게 기록합니다.
“라스베이거스의 동역자 송연이 집사님은 내 사역의 어머니라....”
오늘 송 집사님이 많이 보고 싶네요.


아버지 집에서 다시 만날 그 날을 기대하며....

I am in complete disbelief and saddened by your passing, as it feels like you are still here, as I sit patiently waiting for you to call my name to eat. Grandma, you filled my stomach with your warm, love-infused, delicious home cooked meals. You showed me nothing but love and affection. You dragged me to multiple trips to various National Parks that I dreaded going to, but in hindsight now,  I am extremely grateful for. Memories that I will forever cherish. I will always remember the countless times that you secretly hand me money whenever I go out with friends. Wherever I went, you made it your duty to keep my stomach full. Even in your last weeks, you still refused to let me go out without giving me money. Your kindness and your way of putting others first will be something I will continue to strive for. 

It pains my heart to let you go and I’d trade the world to have just one more day with you. Thank you for being someone that I could always look up to and learn from.

You are loved endlessly and will be missed, though your vibrant presence is always with us. May you rest peacefully in heaven. 사랑해요,할머니.

Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked.

Words cannot fully illustrate the immense gratitude and blessing that I have enjoyed in being able to call you my grandmother. There are many things that I will remember about you. Our conversations that were always filled with warmth and wisdom, regardless of the topic at hand. The delicious meals prepared out of selflessness, love, and expertise. The display of conviction and dedication to your faith and virtues. These are just a named few that fall short of fully encapsulating our time together. I called you "Grandma" but you were so much more. A friend. A confidant. The embodiment of the type of person I strive to become. To say that you will be missed would be understating the obvious. 

Thank you for all the meaningful memories and compassion that you have left with, not only myself, but all of us. Knowing you, that part probably wasn't too difficult.

May you rest in heaven alongside Grandpa. Until we meet again

You guided us like sunlight, and you kept a warm love so deep inside that you always made us happy.  We love you.  We will remember you forever ❤

You always had the bright and sweet smile for everyone, I don’t know you much but thru Sarah I had some of your most delicious food that you shared with us and wonderful sweet daughter we all love.
In your journey of tears and joy , I wish you gain the fellowship with God in Heaven. I will always remember your bright smile and pray for your wonderful journey home. 

She was such a beautiful, vibrant, loving and happy woman. She always had a smile and she loved to feed you. Everytime we came to her restaurant she made so many special things for me since i cant eat shellfish. She was an amazing cook and wonderful mother and Grandmother. She will be missed so much. I am sure she is with her forever love and they are watching over their beautiful family.  May she rest in paradise. 

Dear Halmoni,

Our hearts ache because we miss you very much. Our Thanksgiving dinners won’t be the same without you. Thank you for being another mommy angel and watching over us like our own moms in heaven. We love you so much. And we will take care of your precious children and grandchildren. Rest In Peace…we will meet again one day.
