

He was a native of Lawrence County, retired school teacher and a member of the New Salem Church of God. He greatly enjoyed Southern Gospel music, Vanderbilt basketball, teaching 6th grade for 37 years and traveling.
He enjoyed being a worker for the Lawrence County Schools’ Knowledge Bowl, and also very much liked being a member of the Retired Teachers’ Association. He participated in the Foreign Exchange Student program by housing four students over a period of several years. He gave generously to those in need. He was also a tissue donor.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Jesse and Ruth Cummings.
Survivors include one brother: Jesse Delbert Cummings Jr. (Vickie) of Ethridge; two sisters: Roberta Chennault (Ernest) and Carolyn South, both of Summertown; nieces and nephews; Shannon (Tyson), Kayla (Ricky), Kim, Olivia (Chris), Leslie (Wayne), Tony, Adam, Amanda (Matt); great-nieces and great-nephews: Ashby, Waylon, Wyatt, Alex Jade, Mason, Brookelyn, Sarah, Katie, Jake, Alek, Laila, Hunter, Annah, Tabitha, and one great-great-nephew: Walker.
Funeral services for Virgil Holt Cummings will be conducted at Pettus-Turnbo Chapel, Friday, March 13, 2015 at 2 p.m. with Don Goodrum and Gale Harris officiating. Interment will be in New Salem Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at Pettus-Turnbo, Thursday, March 12, 2015, 5 ~ 8 pm
