Joy Lynn left this earth February 22, 2026 in Leander Texas. After life with dementia and cancer, she was gone too soon at the age of 78. Joy was born on March 15, 1947 in Lubbock Texas to Malcolm Raymond Smith and Georgia Mae (Lamb) Smith.
Joy graduated from Midwestern University with a bachelor’s degree and Texas Tech with a Master’s degree. She was a proud member of the Chi Omega sorority at Midwestern. She worked as a PE teacher, a special education teacher and also worked with the visually impaired. Joy was a successful franchise owner of the Curves for Women in Lubbock.
Prior to moving to Leander to live near her daughter, Joy lived in Lubbock Texas. She was a faithful member of the Community Christian Church. Among many things, Joy cherished a monthly gathering with friends. These times reflected her warm spirit, deep faith, and love of friendship.
Joy was the source of endless laughter and the heart of our family. She was a wonderful supportive mother to her 2 children, Cory Peavler, son (Regina Peavler) and Amy Peavler-Smith, daughter (Brad Smith).
She was a supportive and loving grandmother to her three beautiful granddaughters Maya Peavler, Sydney Smith and Libby Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wes Engram. She is survived by sister Sue Derrick, Sue’s children Kim Faulkner, and Steven Derrick and Sue’s grandchildren Casey, Lauren, Katelyn, and Preston.
Joy took life with a fun, playful spirit. She loved dancing, the theater, her cat Reggie, and traveling especially to the family cabin in Ruidoso and the hot White Sands of New Mexico. Funny, quick witted, and ready to make someone laugh, She brightened up the room with her blue eyes and big smile. Like every good Texan, Joy loved Dr. Pepper and proudly supported her Red Raiders.
Thank you to the many caregivers at The Haven at San Gabriel and Magnolia Hospice for their kindness to Joy.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Lubbock Texas.
