Robert H. Baker, 82, of Lampasas, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026, at the John R. Courtney Texas Veterans Home in Temple, Texas. A man of profound integrity, ingenuity, and grit, Robert lived a life defined by his favorite saying: "Bakers never quit!"
Early Life and Service
Born in San Saba, Texas, on June 10, 1943, to the late Julian and Oreada (Rita) Baker, Robert grew up on a ranch just outside of Lampasas. It was there, that he forged the tireless work ethic that would become his hallmark. After graduating from Lampasas High School, Robert answered the call of duty, enlisting in the United States Navy in 1961.
A proud Golden Shellback, Robert served with distinction aboard the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea and fought on the ground in Danang during the Vietnam War. His technical brilliance as an aviation technician left a lasting legacy; he famously rewired the Sparrow Missiles used on F-4 Phantom fighter jets, ensuring they armed immediately upon launching. This innovation was credited with saving the lives of countless U.S. pilots aboard the USS Coral Sea, the USS Ranger, and at the Marine air station in Danang. Robert eventually chronicled these harrowing and heroic experiences in his book, Flight of the Sparrow.
A Legacy of Family
On September 4, 1965, Robert married the love of his life, Patricia Jones Baker. Together, they shared 60 years of unwavering devotion, building a family rooted in the values of "doing what is right."
Robert was a "force of nature" when it came to his family. Whether he was helping with homework or offering life lessons, he was the foundation upon which his children and grandchildren built their lives. He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia; his son, Michael Baker (Lisa) and his daughter, Kathryn Erwin (Marion)
He was the proud Grandfather to five grandchildren: Emily Baker, Kyle Hollis (Caitlyn), John Baker (Leyah), Sarah Baker (Bryce Barber), and Hunter Erwin; and two great-grandchildren, Harrison Hollis and Poppy Baker. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Roy Baker.
Robert is survived by his nephews, Ross Smart and family and Terry Smart and family.
Passions and Character
When he wasn’t sharing stories of the Navy or his family, Robert could be found outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, but his true sanctuary was the golf course. A gifted craftsman, he spent many hours not only playing the game but meticulously building and repairing golf clubs.
Robert was a man who led by example. He taught his family that hard work isn't just a chore, but a way of life, and that family always comes first. His strength, his stories, and his "never quit" spirit will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following the Funeral service on May 8, 2026. Please contact the Baker family for location details.
