Winnie Lee Powell Felps was born in Tama, Texas (now in Fort Hood) on October 10, 1911, to Bunyan Polk Powell (1868-1968) and Fannie Belle Newman (1878-1971). Winnie passed peacefully at home, at the age of 114. She was the oldest living Texan, third oldest in the United States and tenth oldest in the world, at the time of her death.
She grew up on a farm in Texas and was one of nine children listed in birth order: Artie Uvalde Waldrop, Nona Belle Sparlin, Grady Bunyan Powell, Vada Hibernia Smith, Prentice Raymond Powell, Winnie Lee Felps, Milton James Powell, Venita Elois Adams, Myrtis Gerene Clawson.
She married Ralph Adolph Felps (1912-1982) on December 24, 1935. They had the following children: Dorothy LaNelle Mays and husband Roger (passed) of Virginia, Jimmie Doyle Felps and wife Linda of Texas, Randy Lee Felps and wife Mary (passed) of Missouri, Barbara Jean Rieger and husband Leslie (passed) of Texas, Sandra Lynn Speir and husband Craig (both passed), Brenda Joyce Felps (passed), Ralph Adolph Felps Jr. of Texas, and Winnie Lee Fulkes and husband Doyle of Colorado. She was blessed to have 19 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, 28 great-great-grandchildren. In addition, she had numerous nieces and nephews.
Winnie had a strong faith in God and was a member of the church of Christ. She had many hobbies, such as fishing, oil painting, gardening, traveling, board and card games, puzzles, and antiquing. However, her favorite pastimes were spending time with her family, listening to music, and singing.
