
Brigadier General James A. Herbert passed away on 21 December, 2015 at Cornwall Manor. Born July 20, 1924 in Fairmont, WV, he was the third child, eldest son, of seven children born to Chester Davis and Gertrude Clark Herbert. In a distinguished career of thirty active duty years, mostly in the Pacific Theatre of Operations, he served with the 11th Airborne Division in Japan, the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, KY, and as the Assistant Division Commander of the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, NC. He had five tours of duty totaling six years in Vietnam in a period of ten years.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY in June 1945, he attended military schools at Fort Benning, GA, Fort Leavenworth, KS, the Air War College at Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, AL and received a Masters of International Relations from George Washington University.
He led the 8th Ranger Company in combat in Korea, where he received major wounds. He was named a "Living Legend" by the Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle, PA. He is also a member of The Ranger Hall of Fame at Fort Benning, GA.
He is survived by this wife of more than 69 years, Alice Darquenne Herbert, of Cornwall Manor; three daughters, Faith Alden Marchal of Chelmsford, England, Ann Darquenne Herbert of Geneva, Switzerland, and Elizabeth Herbert Hayward, of Manassas, VA. In addition, there are three grandsons, and two great grand-daughters. Two sisters, Ruth Gnagey of Normal, IL and Jeanne Edward of Bloomfield, KY, also survive.
Services will be held at Zerr Chapel at 2 pm on 29 December. Interment will be 11:30am on 30 December at Fort Indiantown Gap Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cornwall Manor Benevolent Care Fund or to the Superintendent's fund at West Point, NY.
