Our beloved Maureen McEwan left this earth surrounded by her loved ones, after a difficult battle with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. A fighter until the end, she passed away on March 25th 2022 at the age of 76. Maureen requested cremation and no funeral services, and that she be laid to rest in the ocean. Currently we do not have a date for the scattering of ashes ceremony.
Maureen was born in Liverpool, England, where she joined Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corp, obtaining her nursing degree. Soon after, she moved to Canada where she advanced her skills and became a nurse practitioner and midwife. In the 1970s she found herself in the remote communities of the Northwest Territories (Fort Simpson, Fort Liard, Trout Lake, Nahanni Butte, Wrigley, and Hay River to name a few). During her time in the NWT, Maureen delivered thousands of babies, saved countless lives, and extended her skills and passions to the animals in need. The love that Maureen had for all she helped was apparent in the pictures kept and held dear of all of her babies.
In 1992 Maureen retired and moved to Nanton Alberta, then to Tumbler Ridge, BC. Her last years were spent between Edmonton and Leduc, Alberta. She will be remembered by many for her compassion and never-ending selfless acts of kindness. Maureen was survived by many, many loving friends and she will be dearly missed and always remembered.
