JUNE 20, 1920 – FEBRUARY 18, 2022
Beulah was born in Lee County, Virginia, on June 20, 1920, the daughter of Pearlie Mae Wells and Howard James Salley. When Beulah was four years of age, her mother met and remarried. Ray Gardner and Pearlie had three children from their union, Jack, Ewell, and Louise. Beulah, along with her parents and siblings, lived near Big Stone, Virginia. After graduation from high school, Beulah met and married Clifton Edward Snodgrass. She and Cliff had one child, a daughter, Wanda. During World War II, the three moved to Detroit, Michigan to work in the factories producing armaments for the war effort. Beulah operated a rivet gun fabricating B-29 Bomber wings, a true “Rosie the Riveter.” After several moves, Beulah and her family settled in Dayton, Ohio. Her daughter, Wanda, was 19 years of age when she married John Herman. They had three children, John, Robina, and Sandy, Beulah’s only grandchildren. In 1977, Wanda’s family moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where their children grew to adulthood and married spouses. Their families presented Cliff and Beulah with eight great-grandchildren, Jessica, Abbey, Gabrielle, Christian, Victoria, Nathan, Rachel, and Caleb. At the time of her passing, Beulah had two great-great-grandchildren, Eli and Sylvie. Beulah and Cliff pioneered a church in 1965, the First Pentecostal Church of Murlin Heights. They pastored the church for 20 years. The story of the early beginnings of the church was published in 1974, entitled, The Miracle of Murlin Heights. Beulah retired from Kroger Foods, after 35 years as head cashier. After she and Cliff retired as pastors, in 1986, they, too, moved to Birmingham to be close to their daughter and family. Throughout her adult life, Beulah found great joy in gardening, sewing, quilting, traveling, ceramics, writing poetry and teaching bible classes. On February 18, 2022, following declining health and her battle with dementia, she passed peacefully in her sleep. At the age of 101 ½, Beulah went home to be with her Lord and Savior. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Wanda (2013), her husband, Clifton (1993), her parents and many other loved ones. She will be greatly missed.
