On June 2, 2022 at 12:01A.M., Carol passed away peacefully. She is with God and her Mom and Dad. She is survived by her uncle, Billy J. Wilson, and close cousin Harry McDavid and second cousin Susan Pair; and other cousins. All who knew Carol spoke fondly of her humor and dedication to her work. She was preceded in death by her parents: Talmadge “Tad” Clayton and Martha “Mott” Clayton. Her parents are in the picture with Carol when she was three. Carol grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. She was blessed to have loving parents who ensured she had a happy home. She became close to her Granny since she lived close by her for many years growing up. Carol’s middle name, Florence, was her Granny’s first name. Carol found a passion for being a barber and worked 48 years at Gaye Austin’s Barber Shop in Moody, Alabama, until her health started to weaken. Gaye spoke fondly of Carol and said that Carol was a dedicated employee who never missed a day and had a devoted, extensive list of customers. On a humorous note, Gaye instructed Carol to come to work with her shoe laces tied and to refrain from getting into her car by climbing through the door window. Her door wouldn’t open. What choice did Carol have? The first thing Carol would say when she met anyone was to ask what is your birth date. She was an enthusiastic practitioner of astrology and enjoyed greatly sharing with everyone what she knew about them based on astrology. That was her way to make new friends. Here are two examples of Carol’s warmth. When her cousin Harry was five or so, she would help him onto a stool and tell him to pretend he was Elvis Presley and pretend to play guitar. Harry now plays guitar and sings in groups in churches and restaurants. When her cousin Susan was 14 and visiting Carol and Carol’s parents, Carol one time in the backyard gave Susan a necklace and said Susan was a cool kid! Funeral services will be held graveside on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Cemetery beginning at 10:30 AM. The address is 9392 Cedar Mountain Rd, Pinson, Alabama. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy are encouraged to be shared during the service.
